Of Suns and Squids by BronyWriter is, and I think we can all be grateful for this, not about Celestia tentacle porn. That'd be the wrong sort of "hidden depths" for this group.

Since it's a one-shot, and the depths have to do with a reveal that comes at the very end, I'll give you a moment to go and read the fic.

Read the fic! only shows up at the end and not only does the fic not demonize them, more interestingly, it doesn't make them perfect, either. They're still pretty stuck up and concerned about the appearance of things, but that didn't stop them from getting Celestia a gift they knew she'd like. A gift that they, personally, don't much like or approve of, but then, it's not for them.

That consideration, in knowing what to get and getting it despite their personal feelings... it's a brief glimpse, but I'd call that hidden depths.

The fact that read the fic! doesn't show up earlier isn't actually an example of hidden depths, but it IS a great example of the author treating them with more respect than they usually get. An earlier scene would've been a perfect place to use their traditional characterization, but we got an OC instead.
