Ancient bones/ the petrified remains of an ancient tree?

4616152 Gemstones/crystals are neat because they could be just really valuable stones that ponies have fought over for centuries, or they could be magical items enchanted to give the holder any number of effects (enchanced senses, magical powers, fabulous hair, etc). You could also take a normal, everyday item (like a hairbrush) and give it a legendary background (this is the hairbrush that Luna used before turning into Nightmare Moon!).

If you wanted something more connected to canon Equestria, you could use the severed tip of Sombra's horn, or maybe a seed from the Tree of Harmony.
