If you don't want everything to be overpowered, assign limitations to make the battle more interesting. Knowledge against Power? Wisdom against Rashness? Brute Force against Subtle Tactics? The world of combat is our oyster. I like the black and blue pearls myself.

3059844 I think a misconception amongst people is that everypony has Twilight levels of Magic. Magic is Twi's element therefore she'd be the best example of unicorns(before become an Alicorn). I don't think everypony would be able to teleport willy nilly.

I concur combat is part psychology too. Your enemy's mental integrity can greatly affect the outcome. Say if your foe is bellicose, proper provocation could enrage them where they become less effective.
