The New Age teaches that one can become their own God or become like God, and in so doing tells the oldest lie in history and leads people to self-destruction (not least because some, such as John Lilly and Shirley Maclane, used/use drugs like LSD to induce a sort of dream state) and eternal condemnation. I would highly recommend the book The Universe Next Door (6th Edition) by James Sire for another in depth analysis of this movement and its flaws (namely chapter 8, pgs. 156-202).
