The Mimic is part of the same family as the Slime, Goo, Tar, and Grime ponies, but differs due to being fairly tough and resilient. Over the generations, the Mimic has built on the limited morphing of its relatives and become a true shape-shifter. The Mimics’ natural color is a speckled grey, but Mimics can alter their pigmentation to resemble varieties of stone (such as marble), wood grain, and various metals (gold, silver, copper). While capable of morphing into a number of things, they are infamous for their tendency to disguise themselves as treasure chests, tricking the oblivious. Furthermore, the Mimic can secrete a glue-like substance to ensure any food it finds does not get away. Along with glue, they can excrete a liquid that smells like rotting meat; this attracts smaller, more common prey such as rats.

Mimics typically live underground. They are solitary creatures; this is to ensure that each Mimic has a large grazing area. They have no culture; their primary concerns are survival and food. Mimics are quite intelligent and will gladly offer information in exchange for food. Mimics themselves have no moral code and no interest in culture, and those who use them as guardians have sometimes found them to be less than enthusiastic about obeying their commands.

Mimics are omnivores that can digest just about any organic material. Mimics (like other amorphous ponies) are immune to the deleterious effects of alcohol (but will absorb it if offered, to make use of the inherent nutrients and sugar). Mimics are also immune to the corrosive secretions produced by the various motile slime molds they tend to share their habitats with.

While trickery is where the Mimic excels, with time, some adventurers have wizened up to the Mimic’s ruses, capable of spotting them no matter how well they are camouflaged, and a few Mimics who have refused to integrate into more modern society now resort to other tactics to draw in idiots...
