Just sharing a possible alternate universe idea following DC Comics' Death of Superman back in late-1992.

What if Superman actually STAYED dead and, instead, was replaced as the "Main Cape" hero by Captain Marvel/Shazam (depending on which name you prefer)? Yeah, Conner/Superboy, John Henry Irons/Steel and Eradicator could still be introduced as new heroes (anti-hero in Eradicator's case), but in the end, the World's Mightiest Mortal ends up taking Superman's spot as the main beacon of hope and John Henry Irons officially becoming the new main hero of Metropolis.

After all, there was a time throughout the 1940s and into the early-1950s where Captain Marvel was actually more popular than Superman and, at least, post-Crisis but pre-Flashpoint, Captain Marvel was, in universe, often considered more of an Ideal Hero than Superman himself. Why not capitalize on that by LITERALLY making Billy Batson's super-powered adult alter-ego the new Superman (though operating in Fawcett City instead of Metropolis)?

Of course, anybody who likes the idea enough to do it AND can think of enough other ideas to make this work is quite welcome to tackle this.
