We've got twenty letters that are phonetically very similar to English, where a vowel would be found we use either the long modifier or the short modifier to get the sound we want.

Yes. There area few phonetic quirks to the language, however. Most notably, there is no "th" sound. "The" is pronounced either "tuh" or "tee". And then there are the double vowel sounds, such as "ao" like in "cow", or "ai" as in "guy". These are easily rectified. Simply take the vowel that starts the sound, and use the modifier for the vowel that ends the sound.
