So, in one of the flashback of Starswhirl past we see him and his team battling a trio of sirens that, from what I've heard, look a lot like the ones from EQG 2. Using that, it looks like a confirmation that the spin-off is canon.
YET, despite all of that, there are two things that could deny that possibility.
1) Equestria Girls 2 Dazzlings backstory. It is never mentioned that Starswhirl got any help from his team to banishing the sirens to the human world;
2) The freaking comic that actually shows how they got banished.
So, what are your thoughts on this matter?

Probadly a Fanservice. To satisfy our thirst for the lore.
Just like King Sombra's the backstory comic, which lead to "The Siege of the Crystal Empire" comic and how Sombra was reformed. None of that was mentioned in the show.

The same with Equestria Girls franchise. They never mention it in the show.
We got Flash Sentry in both franchises, but I don't think that the show and the movies are "connected" each other.
It is kinda like all those non-canon Dragon Ball Z movies. Just for entertainment and marketing.
