-Underpowered

-Faulty electrical system, hydraulics, and propellor

-Bad longitudinal stability on account of a short fuselage (a compromise so the Helldiver could fit on a carrier elevator)

-Bad aileron response and handling under 100 mph (a serious problem since the average approach speed for landing on a carrier was approximately 98 mph).

That’s just the big issues. The Navy brass found a whopping 880 defects with the Helldiver and refused to deploy it until they were rectified. Many of these problems were fixed with the SB2C-3 and subsequent variants. The Helldiver didn’t enter combat until early November 1943 and gave good service in the Pacific, but it never shook its bad rep.
