On the evening of September 3, 1939, just hours after Britain declared war on Nazi Germany, the 13,000 ton luxury liner Athenia became the first casualty of the Battle of the Atlantic when she was torpedoed by a U-boat hundreds of miles from the North Irish coast. Now, 78 years later, her final resting place may have been found.
