Here is my idea. Instead of nightmare moon being banished to the moon she is killed along with luna and celestia is in despair and 1000 years luna is reborn as a little pony named twilight sparkle but doesn't know she is luna reincarnated. The idea how this happens is every 1000 years a pony is reincarnated. Why 1000 because the writers use that all the time
