But then again the Hallowed Jhen Mohran does have a magical look to it.
You can say that the earth dragon gems/spheres forming inside the beast started emanating energy which in turn has the capacity to make a portal. You of course would need to cook up some sort event or item that would be the "catalyst" that would set of the whole thing off and fling the lynians into Equestria.

Not to mention it's described to have a "crystalline"' appearance which you can then connect to the Crystal Empire someway.

sidenote: Elemental magic exist in the world of MH so you do have something to lean on.

As for the Shakalaka:

Simply look at them and you can clearly see their the tribal origins of their design. Then add to that the "fireball barrage" attack of a King Shakalaka can only be magic (kinda hard to believe that that was just some sort of explosive). Based on that one can infer that to some extent they are capable of more tricks than just raining fireballs at hunters and as the lifestyle of these Lynians were never explored much you can freely fill on the blanks by drawing on the plethora of stories with shamans and witch doctors in them. And remember that Cha Cha was a warrior and therefore cannot be used as a mold for their whole society.

They also have the motive for trying to banish the hunter. Look at it from their perspective; how would you like it if some jerk suddenly barging into your village then knock out your family and friends, steal your valuable junk treasure, and generally wreck havoc?

I find that rather original but discord at Derpy's hanging out with Dash then all of a sudden two cats ( felynes) clad in armor pop out of no where and land on top of then then are safe guarded by dinky to stop rainbow dash from mauling them since they began to wreck everything by "accident" in derpy's home looking like the misunderstood bad guy sounds like a good idea to me.

Edit: since i am planning on making the story revolve around them you get the idea.

In my opinion Dashie hanging out with Derpy isn't the most likely of scenarios to start off mainly because of the fact that the only time we see the two of them together caused a lot of misery for poor ol Dashie.

Discord, Pinkie and Dashie/ Derpy (aka one or the other) is a more likely scenario.

I also don't think the two going hysterical outright is the way to go. Scratching their head and "wondering where they are nya." feels like a more appropriate reaction for them. If they are gonna be attacking anyone it would be Discord, mainly because he does resemble a deformed dragon (Fatalis).

Heck he'd probably be amused and play along in the fight, then when it gets stopped by somepony ( can't think of Discord stopping something he finds to be so much fun). He then exclaims his interest at the felynes and asks them what they are. This of course causes everypony around to scratch their head as they thought the cat things are on of his chaotic schemes.

The two felynes (most likely restrained by something ... taffy magicked by Discord when he was asked to stop maybe) would probably be starring in bewilderment at the whole thing.

Oh and sidenote again: please please please do not place to much importance on what armor and weapons they bring. No matter if you make them don the simple Acorn armor or give them Alatreon armor please don't make it so that the equipment is so great and gives them a big boost in their abilities, they do not need it. Between being able to survive any sort of situation and their access to a bomb filled hammer space they are already good.

Oh and don't forget to make them cook for the ponies, that would be something!
