RIP Kazuki Takahashi · 4:56pm Jul 8th, 2022
'Yu-gi-oh!' creator Kazuki Takahashi found dead at sea at 60
This may not feel like a fitting place to do it, but I just wanted to come somewhere and let out a little emotion. This struck me completely out of the blue today, and I can't help but feel a little impacted myself. No one here probably knows this about me, but growing up I was big into trading cards. I collected a few different ones, but the only one I actually knew how to play was Yu-gi-oh!, and I played it quite a bit with friends and classmates growing up, even as recently as college. I loved the anime, I loved the characters, I most of all loved the monsters and how such disparate art styles all felt like they belonged together in some way. I fell out of love with the card game as it got more complex (I had trouble understanding Synchro Summoning at the time, though I get it now, and I definitely was out before they added Xyz Monsters), but it still holds a special place in my heart as one of the things that inspired my young creativity. Heck, I even started designing a set of cards based around MLP several years ago.
I'm saddened that we were parted from Mr. Takahashi so soon, and in an unnatural way. I'm sure he will be missed, but I and many other people who never met him will keep him alive through our appreciation of his work and his wonderful imagination.
Rest in Peace
Kazuki Takahashi
