The Black Phone-Reciew (Spoilers) · 9:11pm Jun 24th, 2022
I thought that The Black Phone was a great film. The film was co-written,produced, and directed by Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange; Sinister; The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and was also co-written by C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange; Sinister; No Man of God). The film is based on the 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill. The film features great direction and writing, great performances, great music, great editing, great cinematography, great sets, great masks, great action, great themes. The film stars Mason Thames, Madeline McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone, and Ethan Hawke.
In 1978, a series of kids being kidnapped and never been seen again has occurred in Denver, Colorado. One day, a boy (Thames) gets kidnapped by a stranger known as “The Grabber” (Hawke) and takes him to his place. Meanwhile, the kid’s sister (McGraw) sees visions of the victims which also shows clues to where her brother is being held captive. As the boy is staying captive, there’s a black phone that is placed in the room that doesn’t work. The black phone rings however and on the other end is The Grabber’s victims who have been killed by him. They help the boy in attempts of him escaping as well as to fighting back. The boy needs to get out alive before it’s too late.
The film features themes such as family, friendship, abduction, survival, faith, religion, hope, seeking help, not giving up, abuse, bullying, standing up for yourself and others, fear, bravery, courage, death, murder, spirits, the afterlife, help, trust, respect, change, staying hidden, identities. I highly recommend this film.
