Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with more The Owl House content! Today, I will be reviewing the fifteenth episode of season 2 entitled: “Them’s the Breaks, Kid.” To be honest, this is far from being one of my favorite episodes although it was still interesting to say the least. This is a flashback episode that focuses on how Eda met Raine Whispers when they were kids a long time ago.

What’s also interesting is the informal expression of the title “Them’s the Breaks”. It basically means “that’s the way it happens especially when something unpleasant occurs”. When I personally learned that, I thought this was gonna be a heartbreaking flashback that would contain emotional damage and sad scenes. But it turns out to be a light-hearted episode with a surprise twist at the end. I have no problems with this episode even though I was slightly underwhelmed and bored with it.

It was really nice seeing the young forms of Eda and Lilith again, but seeing a young Raine Whispers was just amazing for me. Their interaction as kids together was adorable and well-written. The voice acting was also well done, most notably from Natalie Palamides for young Eda and Blu del Barrio for young Raine (who is also non-binary).

What was the most shocking to me was the revelation that Raine has been faking their memory loss the whole time by quietly whistling on Snapdragon’s tea in order to disenchant the memory loss spell. They basically kept doing this back in the eleventh episode when they were talking with Kikimora. I didn’t realize that subtle detail until I watched this episode and then re-watched that specific scene in “Follies at the Coven Day Parade”. That’s just amazing brilliant writing by Dana. So their fight with Eda was just an act in order to keep her safe from Belos. That’s just....wow, I have no more words for that.

This episode gets a B+. Like I said, this was a very interesting episode but it’s not my favorite kind of episode, ya know what I mean? Just my opinion. Can’t wait for next week’s episode though (Hollow Mind).

Peace!
