Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with more The Owl House content! This afternoon, I will be reviewing the fourteenth episode of season 2 entitled: “Reaching Out”. This was honestly a very emotional episode to watch. It sort of hit me hard but at the same time gave me smiles as it contained humorous, light-hearted scenes here and there. This is about Amity trying to prove herself to her father Alador that she has no interest in joining a coven. Thus, Luz helps her out by participating in Underground Witch Duels.

What I love most about this episode is that Alador was given some slight character development. We see that he isn’t a completely bad person, but it’s clear since “Understanding Willow” that he is not a good parent and as seen in “Escaping Expulsion”, he is very neglectful towards his children. However, we see that he is trying to be a better parent albeit he has a long way to go. So it was a start for his redemption, and I like that he and Amity didn’t instantly reconcile at the end. It takes time for forgiveness to fully grow. From my experience, it takes a lot of time.

Another thing is this: we finally see that Luz used to have a father when she was little until he unfortunately passed away. The way she tried to hide her pain and lied about how she felt was heartbreaking. I can’t imagine being stuck in a different world where I’m unable to attend the grave of a loved one with flowers with a surviving parent, but I know how it feels to lose a relative. I lost two grandmothers who were very close to me (my mother’s mom in June 1st, 2014 and my dad’s mom in November 19th, 2020), so I totally felt Luz’s pain in this episode.

I especially liked the fact that Edric had his own screen time as an actual character in this episode instead of being part of a duo like before. I did say in my season 1 episode reviews that I want Emira and Edric to stand apart as solo characters with developing personalities, and they actually gave me my wish. That makes me happy! Edric was just adorable in this episode especially in his casual clothing. That was fun to watch.

The more Luz and Amity hang out together, the more they grow together as characters. As usual, they were adorable together even in their new outfits; they had their first legitimate problem they had to sort out, and they talked it out like how a young couple would.

Overall, this episode was emotional, deep, yet profound. Aside from some pacing issues, it handled the themes of family, death, and relationships very well. Props to Dana Terrace and her team for their brilliant writing and storytelling. This gets an A-!

Peace!

so I totally felt Luz’s pain in this episode.

Same here on that level as well, Mr. J.

For me.... -sigh- I still remember losing my mom back on May 19th, 2014 to of Type II Diabetes. :(

I’m sorry to hear that. *hugs*

Yeah.

I'm still getting used to it overtime though, but... man... it can be hard to forget it sometimes. :(
