Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with more The Owl House content! Tonight, I will be reviewing the ninth episode of season 2 entitled: “Eclipse Lake”. This was one of the most hyped episodes of season 2A before the time of airing since it featured and heavily promoted Amity and Hunter meeting each other for the first time. It surely got a lot of people excited to see their interaction and how it will be executed. Once I got to see it back in August, I was both impressed yet somewhat underwhelmed at the same time. This is probably the first time in which I am not entirely thrilled with this episode. It could have been so much better, but I still enjoy the likable parts thereof.

Luz has now the Common Mold, and it is up to Eda, King, and Amity to search for an important ingredient for the portal. However, we see that Hunter is also looking for it along with the key for the portal since Belos needs it for the portal to work (albeit he ordered him to stay inside the castle). With Hunter and Amity crossing paths, things get a little heated between them.

What I like about the episode was the fact that both Hunter and Amity have much in common when it comes to their background, personality, and how both have traumatic experiences. So their interaction was spot-on for the most part. But what I hated about the episode was how insufferable Eda and King were. They acted like idiots and made cringeworthy remarks towards Hunter and other things that just gave me the impression they were high on crack. They just sounded so off in this episode.

Again, we see that Hunter is trying to please Belos and prove that he isn’t a screw-up and has a strong fear of being replaced. When Hunter said that he feared disappointing someone who thinks he is special, that made it clear to me that Belos mentally abused him when he was much younger after he took him in. If a child ever thinks like that or was raised to have that mindset with so much dread, that raises red flags. And like I said before, I truly think that Belos doesn’t care about him at all except that he is valuable for the Titan’s plans and is needed for them to succeed. Something terrible is about to happen soon, and Hunter needs to realize that before it’s too late.

Overall, this episode was pretty good but it suffers from some characters acting annoyingly stupid (i.e. Eda and King). Plus, the fight scene between Hunter and Amity was pretty well-done and well-animated. That was quite epic, I’ll admit. Hopefully, Hunter will progress more as a character and lives his life on his own when all this ends. This gets a B-.

Peace!
