Greetings, everyone! This is Mr. J back with more The Owl House content! This evening, I will be reviewing the eighteenth episode of the show entitled: “Agony of a Witch”, the first part of the season finale. We are finally towards the finale of the season which leads us to our main antagonist raising the stakes for our heroes and making his threatening move. This was a very intense yet awesome episode that was filled with emotional moments, character development, and amazing action choreography. This is about Lilith increasing her efforts to capture Eda and bring her to the Emperor’s Coven; meanwhile, Luz is on an educational field trip with her friends until she is distracted and discovers Lilith talking with the Overlord of the Boiling Isles: Emperor Belos.

I am going to be completely honest when I say this: this guy is the most interesting character in the entire show. In fact, he is my most favorite character in The Owl House for a few reasons: he is menacing, charming, highly intelligent, very mysterious, and overall entertaining to watch. Not to mention just how intimidating he is whenever he brightens his blue eyes underneath the mask and whenever he speaks in his sexy voice. I may not know much about his voice actor—Matthew Rhys—but it seems to me he was the right choice to be cast as the voice of Belos. The fact that Belos is despised by half the fandom for the things he’s doing and is loved by the other half of the fandom for his character design and his mysterious background only testifies of how great of a villain he is. I hope to see more of him in the latter half of season 2B.

This episode reveals to us that Lilith was the one who cursed Eda when they were a lot younger due to jealousy and anger over the fact that Eda is stronger and better than her in every way. That added extra layer to Lilith’s character and shows us just how vulnerable she was. This is how sympathetic villains ought to be done especially in a kids show. They are antagonists you can feel sorry for and relate to, and they provide reasons for why they turned out this way. Also, spoiler alert, in the next and final episode, we see Lilith betray Belos to help Luz and Eda after seeing how truly tyrannical he is.

In my opinion, that is a villain redemption done right unlike the majority of pathetic villain reformations in Steven Universe and MLP. Yeah, it’s rare when Disney does something right as opposed to what non-Disney shows have done before. But that’s besides the point...

Overall, this was an excellent start of the finale which managed to exceed expectations, mix our emotions, and surprise us with a turn of events we would’ve never seen coming from a mile away. As this episode shows, one evil deed can lead to many disastrous results. Think on that. This episode easily gets an A, no question.

Peace!

I tell ya Mr. J, when Lilith delivered that Wham Line:

Then why were you so easy to curse?!

I was like: HOLY CRAP!
