Greetings to you all! This is Mr. J back with my final movie review for 2021 and for our very last Disney Friday! I will now be giving my take on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland from 2010. It seems quite fitting that I end the year with a Tim Burton movie review just like how I began this month with a Tim Burton movie review and started this year with a Disney live-action remake review. It all comes full circle, ladies and gentlemen. Haha! Anyway, this is yet another one of Tim Burton’s well-done fantasy films that not many people appreciate or recognize. I personally liked this movie ever since I first watched it around late 2010 since it had its dark, humorous, yet mysterious tone therein. It really hooked my interest to watching it there and then.

Even after re-watching this movie last month, I still find it to be both entertaining, well-written, and profound in my opinion. Here we see Alice, nineteen years old, getting ready for a wedding to marry a guy she has no interest in whatsoever (as she was forced to). However, she spots an antromorphic rabbit hopping around with a sense of urgency and follows him to a deep hole below a tree. She falls down and finds herself in a fantasy world which she had dreams about before. She wonders if this is a dream or something real she is experiencing.

If I am blatantly honest, I much prefer this interesting take on the story over the animated 1951 version. This has a more cohesive narrative with character-driven elements as opposed to the animated version where almost every character has no sense of rationality and acts high on drugs. I’m sorry but I can’t stand that version 😂.

Additionally, the majority of the acting in this movie was pretty great. The main actor who stood out the most to me was the performance of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. His character was both tragic, sympathetic, and had an actual reason in being called the “Mad” Hatter and not just because. Johnny Depp was definitely the right guy for the role.

I likewise enjoyed the wonderful performances of Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, the late Alan Rickman, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry, and Timothy Spall. Each character they played/voiced were convincing and well-developed which made them all three-dimensional and complex.

Have I ever mentioned how splendid Tim Burton’s choreography is? I don’t know how that man does it, but his animations and choreography are so visually appealing it’s not even funny! That’s one of the things I love about his movies besides his iconic gothic themes.

This movie shows us that fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing. Whichever path we walk in and no matter how many times we may try to deny our destiny, we cannot ignore what our life’s purpose is. We must still decide how we should go about it.

So despite some slow-pacing and awkward acting issues this movie suffers from, it is nonetheless a great movie and an awesome adaption of Alice in Wonderland. This gets a mighty 10/10!

And that concludes my movie reviews for the year! Later in the evening, I will post my announcements for January as well as some pet-peeves that must be addressed.

Happy New Year, folks! 💜🎇💜🎇💜

I agree with you on this.

This movie is slightly flawed in some ways, but it’s nevertheless an entertaining and awesome film to watch. It was definitely better than Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, which was ironically quite lifeless and boring compared to “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”.

When this came out I was OBSSESED. But since I watched it with 3d glasses the scene when she fell into the rabbit hole got me very dizzy.
