Pharynx’s characterisation · 7:45pm Dec 12th, 2021
So, as of late I’ve been watching The Regular Show (wow, an MLP fan watching TRS, I wonder why that would ever happen), and as I write for Pharynx now - a character who’s rather iffy to write for, as he’s only had one episode of speaking, with fleeting and silent cameos in the finale and The Best Gift Ever aside - I find it a little easier than before.
I tend to try to listen for character’s voices when I write dialogue for them, so it seems in character, and recently I found myself hearing Pharynx’s voice much easier than normal. Thus with TRS relatively fresh in my mind, I came to the conclusion that it was the character Muscle Man’s voice I was hearing, not Pharynx.
When writing This Is What It’s Like, I had to watch clips of Pharynx speaking in hopes of writing him a little better. And then there was of course Husk from the Hazbin Hotel, who had even less lines than our grungy bugaboo, but helped with writing Pharynx’s natural stand-offishness towards Thorax.
Ergo (TL;DR), a newfound tip for writers who find it difficult to write Pharynx - I’m one of you - (we needed more of him, we really, really do), is to literally hunt down a gravelly/grungily derpy-voiced character that’s stand-offish (Husk), aggressive/protective (Muscle Man), or both with lines-aplenty, and watch them until you can punch at least one sentence you can hear Pharynx say, or an action you can see him doing, into your computer/phone/whatever, and know that you’re doing good.
You’re writing a character we’ve only had one episode on - you’re doing good.
Very interesting tips. As someone who writes Pharynx a lot—like, a lot lot—I need to keep that in mind.

I’ve read some of your works (I love them, just so you know). I’m sure one of them is in my Favourites. Oh, and for your bio: He is best Changeling. I WILL NOT CHANGE YOUR MIND.
I’ve fallen into the wormhole of Changeling revolution / reformed Changelings. All works I have not including them that I want to write, I’m just a little bit like “Meh. It can wait”, because there’s some sort of gravitational pull towards Changeling lore, both reformed and unreformed, that I find myself dragged into. And that surrounding the draconequus-phenomenon, but I’m sure all of this goes without saying.
And hey, if not for the recent spike in Mordetwi’s popularity, I wouldn’t have this hopefully-helpful tip to give.

Pretty much sums up my feelings towards changelings as well. I didn’t start getting into them until Thorax’s appearance in Season 6.
Aw, thanks buddy.
