I don't know man. I think it seems legit to me.
If we're talking about the reason the author wrote it in the first place, other than some response that's 'I dunno, just felt to write'-ish, there's always something for the writing: for practice, solving your own boredom, inspiration, a message to society, etc.
For the readers, they'll always be someone out there to give a purpose/meaning to the creation, whether it sucks or not. So, with this reasoning, the writing will always have a purpose, just not to some people.
Of course, this is just my opinion, and I ain't some professor in literature, so feel free to correct or agree with me. ;)
