Greetings to you all! I am back with another movie review for today! This afternoon, I will be reviewing a 1997 comedy film which is simply called Bean. Now, before I begin talking about this movie, I do want to give a background behind my familiarization with Mr. Bean. I honestly never heard of this movie except for the sequel and the original 1990s show. As a matter of fact, I grew up watching Mr. Bean’s Holiday which is still one of my favorite comedy movies of all time. I also grew up watching all fifteen episodes of the original series which I have very fond memories of. So when MarlonCalpe4000 requested me to review this film, I thought to myself, “You know what? I’ll give this a chance since I’ve enjoyed the sequel and the original show.” So that is my history with this franchise.

With that being said, I watched this movie for the first time with high expectations that it would be just as highly as entertaining as Mr. Bean’s Holiday and the OG series. But after watching it through....... it wasn’t as good as I thought it would be.

Let me start with the positives first:

1). Firstly, the comedy was on-point and Rowan Atkinson’s acting was spectacular! He was literally born to play his most iconic role as Mr. Bean and immersed himself deeply into his character so much to the point where he is Mr. Bean. Honestly, it’s very hard to separate his character from Rowan Atkinson because every time I look at his face, I say, “Yup, that’s Bean.” That says a lot about how perfect he was and is for the role he’s been playing for a long time.

2). All the Easter eggs and callbacks to the original show were well-timed and great. I couldn’t help but laugh at the jokes involving him and from him here and there.

3). The cinematography and editing were likewise amazing.

4). The character development was also really well-written as we see Mr. Bean interact with the characters and help solve problems in his own weird way. Considering the fact that he is a dim-witted buffoon who understands little of how simple things in life work, I wasn’t surprised by how he caused these issues and how he resolved them in his own way.

As for as the negatives are concerned, I will say the following things that actually annoyed me or didn’t impress me one bit:

1). Some of the other characters were a bit boring and unrealistic when it comes to their acting and their reactions. I mean, these guys have known Mr. Bean for quite some time and... they’re still hesitant to be distant from him? I can see why his employers wanted to fire him so badly, but he’s been with them for many years, so how is it he has such a positive reputation?

2). The pacing felt so slow, and the dialogue felt awkward and cringeworthy at certain places. Nevertheless, it was overall serviceable. Nothing more or less.

3). Some of the jokes fell flat on the ground and didn’t stick with me. I had to pause/skip certain scenes so that I wouldn’t suffer through the torturous cringe.

4). Lastly, the story is nowhere as exciting and engaging as was the story from the sequel. Maybe it’s just me, but I felt kinda bored with the plot and wanted something actually entertaining to happen or for Mr. Bean to do something which he did in the original series.

So yeah, this movie doesn’t hold up that much in my opinion. I won’t deny that I did have some fun watching it for the first time, but this has got to be the weakest installment of the franchise for me personally. Still, it is above-average and technically competent in terms of the comedy and the main character himself who was the only character I loved watching again after all these years. Unfortunately, this is not the type of movie I would watch again. Therefore, I rate this a 6/10.

Peace!

For your review, I've thought I share you some deleted scenes from the Bean Movie and with commentary from Rowan Atkinson. Maybe this would have made the movie better? I'm happy to hear your thoughts on it but here's a treat! :yay:

Some of the scenes felt unnecessary while others were funny. Thanks for sharing.
