Greetings, folks. This is yours truly back with another review for today’s Disney Friday. I will be discussing what I think of one of Disney’s most ridiculous and poorly executed direct-to-video sequels: The Return of Jafar. By Primus, this is one of those sequels that could have been so much better but ended up being really over-the-top and being more plot-driven than character-driven. In my opinion, this film doesn’t hold up at all to its predecessor and is nowhere being enjoyable as some people would call it as. This is gonna be a quick review, so let’s get right into it, shall we?

First off, the animation is just downright terrible. While I can excuse its low budget, that doesn’t mean I can tolerate the abysmal animation and low-quality visuals. The character designs were even atrocious as well especially in regards to its new characters. Speaking of which, the new characters were forgettable at best and irritating at worst. The only new character I remember is Abis Mal, voiced by Jason Alexander. Honestly, the only thing I liked about him was his mentioned voice actor. That’s it.

The story is really boring and wastes no time in shitting out below average humor and pointless slapstick that has nothing to do with the plot. Literally none of these scenes are funny or clever in any way, shape, or, form.

While I actually like the fact that the original voice actors/actresses came back for their respective roles such as Jonathan Freeman for the titular villain along with their splendid voice acting, it didn’t save the film for me. Even worse was the fact that the late Robin Williams refused to reprise his role as Genie due to the fallout he had with Disney around that time. Dan Castellaneta wasn’t that bad as Genie, but he wasn’t great either. Nothing more or less.

The only scenes I liked were the death scene of Jafar (done by Iago himself which I thought was kinda ironic and hilarious) and the scenes involving Iago himself. Gilbert Gottfried truly is a legend.

Unfortunately, this film doesn’t hold that up even to this day. The story is wack, the animation is garbage, the characters (except Iago) were annoying, the comedy is dumb, and the execution was just so bad. Not a worthy sequel in my book. It gets a 4/10. Thankfully, the end of the trilogy proves itself to be a light at the end of the tunnel as proven before.

Peace!

I'd trust Iago as much as I'd like to eat him. And he looks delicious.

Once again, I’m not surprised by this in the slightest.

It’s been a while since I last saw this movie, but I remember it not being terrible by any means. At least, to me.

I haven´t watched this movie (I watched the third though) but it´s pretty bad. The only reedemable qualities might be the songs and Iago redeeming. You can see this is one of the first sequels, as the animation was really bad. I don´t know how but they managed to improve the animation throughout the years. I mean, compare this to the Jungle Book 2!

I´m curious, how many disney sequels have you watched?

The only Disney Sequels I haven’t watched are Bartok the Magnificent and Atlantis: Milo’s Return. So... yeah. LMAO 😂

5572238
So you watched Belle´s Magical World... Oof :rainbowlaugh:

5572245
The fuck.... that actually exists??

5572251
Yup. Let´s just say disney sequels are an alley full of failures :rainbowlaugh:

Whether it’s just me is something I don’t know, but I think this was one of the few direct-to-video sequels made with a sense of creative purpose. Jafar was one of the very few Disney antagonists to not be killed off by the main character, and so the question of whether he’d somehow come back was one that I thought was worth tackling. That, and the filmmakers’s high interest in Iago and what to do with him was obviously a great motivator.

After all, the reformation of a Disney minion or villain is surprisingly rare.

If I may say, “Bartok: The Magnificent” is actually a direct-to-Video sequel made by 20th Century Fox, which was the same company that also did “Anastasia”.

5594186
20th century fox is owned by Disney which automatically makes it a Disney movie.

5594187
🤷🏻‍♂️That doesn’t mean it counts, though. The movie was made long before Disney bought Fox.

As a matter of fact, despite being owned by Disney now, Fox seems to still be working like it’s a separate entity. Heck, they’re even fully-credited as the sole distributors of upcoming movies and previous ones.

5594189
It’s pretty much common knowledge that any industry that is owned by Disney turns their films into Disney films by default. Deny it all you want, but that’s just how it is unfortunately.

And honestly, Disney can kiss my ass for being so money-hungry.

5594191
Well, that goes for me with companies like Warner Bros., Netflix, and Paramount really.

People always say that Disney’s guilty of being money-hungry, yet in reality...every motion picture company’s like that. Heck, the only reason “Space Jam” was made was so that Warner Bros could make some easy money off of the Looney Tunes and Michael Jordan being in the same film, which is one of the reasons I hate that movie.

5594193
Of course. Nobody is perfect. I truly miss the days when movies were made with heart, passion, and effort like the original The Lion King and The Huntchback of Notre Dame. Two of the best Disney movies ever.

5594196
:twilightsmile:Agreed.

In my opinion, the times where film companies were at their peek were also when they didn’t concern themselves with being politically-correct. Like when Warner Bros. wasn’t afraid of giving Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam guns.

5594198
Those were good times, yeah. Speaking of Looney Tunes, you were able to watch Space Jam 2?

5594199
Not yet. There are other movies I want to review first.

I do plan on seeing it and posting my review for the film in April, though.

5594202
Okay, no rush. I was just curious.

5594203
I just remembered what company is the most money-hungry out of all businesses:

Amazon.

5594224
Because they’ve bought more companies than any other business combined. Heck, they’re currently in the process of buying MGM.

5594226
Really? That’s new to me. 🤔

5594227
Yep. They bought IMDb, Comixology, Whole Foods Market, etc.

5594239
Looks like Disney has some competition going on then. Lol 😂

5594246
Same goes with Warner Bros., Universal, and Paramount too. Mainly considering they also bought a lot of companies and products.

Basically, Amazon’s rapid buying of other companies and eliminating of competition makes even Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox look like child’s play.
