Hello there. Here is yet another boring Disney sequel to review. (Sigh) I am now on a roll with these guys, am I? So tonight, I will be talking about the sequel to the first Little Mermaid movie called The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea. Is it just me or does the plot of this movie slightly rehashes the plot from the last film? Nope, it isn’t me. Here we have a new protagonist by the name of Melody (voiced by Tara Strong) who is very adventurous and loves to associate herself with the sea creatures and the sea. She is also really stubborn, self-willed, and naive. Hmm, like daughter like mother. Makes sense to me.

Although it is really concerning and weird to me that Ariel is now a mother—a teen mom at that. Does she know how to be a dutiful mom at such a young age?

Anyway, Melody is not allowed to swim in the sea due to the fact that Morgana, Ursula’s sister, is after her there. Hold on... Why did they build a massive wall around the city just to prevent one little girl from entering to the sea? I get that her parents wanted to protect her from the villainess, but if she can get easy access to the sea with NO problem anyway, what was the point of building the wall in the first place? It didn’t stop her at all! And if she is to never know her true origin or her place in the undersea kingdom, does that mean that all the humans must never tell her either? Never explained! Actually, here’s a better question: Why can’t she know about her background at all? Isn’t that completely excessive?

The songs were incredibly underwhelming, underutilized, and forgettable. It doesn’t even feel like a Disney musical with that little songs in it. The voice acting was good though as well as the decent animation style. I liked Clancy Brown’s performance as Undertow as you can clearly hear Mr. Krabs in his voice. Are ya feelin’ it now, Mr. Undertow?

Morgana was only good because of her voice provided by Pat Carroll herself (the same voice actress of Ursula). As far as her character is concerned, she is a complete waste of a villainess. It’s really hard to tell if she wanted to avenge her sister’s death or if she really hated her guts due to the rivalry she apparently had with her to compete for their mother’s affection and approval. I can hardly call her a complex character if the writers couldn’t make up their minds on which route they wanted her to go through.

Ariel and Eric were bland as hell in this film. Oh, and King Triton can see her anytime he wants to, huh? I guess that heartbreaking emotion he displayed at the end of the first movie didn’t matter. He really didn’t have to “miss her”.

The comedy relief characters, Tip and Dash, were okay but not that great.

So overall, this entire movie felt nothing but a pointless, boring, generic continuation of the original but is littered with plot holes and inconsistencies. The only voice performers whom I thought did their best were Tara Strong, Clancy Brown, and Pat Carroll. Tara Strong’s favorite role was surprisingly being a little mermaid. I’m not kidding; check this out for yourself. I’m very happy she enjoyed herself in this film.

For me, this also gets a 2/10. It appears that Transformers: Age of Extinction was right about remakes and sequels.

Peace.

This has got to be the most ironic sequel Disney ever made.

The mother dreamt of life on land, and the daughter dreamt of life in the sea.

Ah.
Still a boring Disney sequel though.

Yeah, not much excitement. I seriously wish my cousin would at least consider watching a Pokemon movie or something that'd keep me awake.

It’s been years since I last saw this movie, but I remember watching it a lot as a child.

I will definitely say that I too couldn’t help but feel critical on the character of Morgana, although it’s not just the fact that the writers apparently couldn’t make up their minds as to what her overall intentions were. I think one of the biggest problems was that her inclusion felt out of nowhere, as her existence didn’t have much of an explanation other than being Ursula’s sister and she had little in the ways of a backstory compared to Ursula, such as whether she was banished from Atlantica long before just like Ursula was.
