Fallout New Vegas: Unexpected Friends- Good Story With a Big Letdown- Part 1 · 7:57pm Feb 18th, 2021
This is a story that, quite frankly, I'm not sure how to describe, or at least I don't know where I stand. On the one hand, this is a very well written story that has earned the praise it's gotten. But on the other, this story has so many things that just..... frustrate me. I'm sure that all my problems are just subjective, and possibly amplified from other points of view, but I just can't ignore them. But, I'm getting ahead of myself.
Let's start with the good. The story itself is rather well-written, and the progression of the story feels very natural. The inciting incident that sends Twilight to the Mojave Wasteland doesn't feel forced, if not a little questionable. The way events play out is a decent compromise between the main game and the DLCs. On a technical level, this story is very good.
Now, before I go into the problems, I need to clear something up: I have never played any of the Fallout games. This probably weakens my argument, but I just need you all to see where I'm coming from with this. Now, while I have not personally played the games, I have been a long time watcher of the youtuber named Oxhorn. And if any of you know Oxhorn, you know that he goes through every option when making his videos on the lore of the Fallout games. He has gone through almost every corner of both the main quest, side quests, and DLCs for Fallout New Vegas, and formed his own opinions. And personally? I agree with him on a lot. And this is where most of the problems come in: the choices.
Take Honest Hearts. I'm personally on the side of Joshua Graham, and I think the Sorrows should fight back against the White Legs. Now, I'll admit that although I had this thought beforehand, Oxhorn definitely cemented the idea in his ninth video of the Honest Hearts DLC miniseries. I also really like it when you're able to talk an enemy down. In the Exodus route, when you confront Salt Upon Wounds, you have the option to talk him down using a speech check. What happens in the story? They take the Exodus route and attack Salt Upon Wounds out of instinct. While this is a perfectly fine way to do it, my personal preference wanted for them to talk him down rather than kill him outright, if not take the war path altogether.
I'll be continuing this in a Part 2 tomorrow, as I need to collect my thoughts fully before continuing. Hope to see you all there!
