No straight Roads Review: Part 1: DJ Subatomic Supernova · 12:53am Jan 24th, 2021

Hey everyone. Remember when I said I'd review No Straight Roads? Yeah, well, It's finally time. I'm gonna be blunt here, No Straight Roads is a very mixed-bag of a game. There's things that I love, things that annoyed me, and things that pissed me off to no end. However, I shall save my overall thoughts on the game as a whole, problems and all, for later. For today, I'll be talking about something that truly surprised me; the boss roster. With only six bosses total, plus the fact that I find EDM as a musical genre to be okay overall, I honestly didn't expect to like these bosses in the slightest. Because these bosses are so good,(at least to me), doing just an overview wouldn't do them the justice they deserve. So without further delays or ado, lets begin with the first boss you encounter, DJ Subatomic Supernova!

DJSS as a whole represents the EDM genre of deep disco,(or Disco Stellarum, as the developers call it). Now, let me ask you an honest question. When you think, "EDM", what's the first kind of music you imagine? Probably some funky, slightly otherworldly club beat, right? Well, that's what we get here, and I'm certainly not complaining, because the boss theme sounds really good.

As for DJSS's character... well, You know the phrase, center of the universe? That's DJ Subatomic Supernova. Putting it bluntly, DJSS is a gigantic egotistical, narcissistic douchebag. He belittles friend and foe alike, constantly believes and expresses that he's smarter and better than you, and overall, exudes an air of smug elitism that just makes you want to punch him in the face. He honestly thinks he's deeper than he really is. I mean for god's sake, his name is DJ SUBATOMIC SUPERNOVA! That's a name that only comes from trying so hard to sound deep, that you miss the obvious contradiction. As for his fight, it's actually really good. It's simple enough for a first boss, but complex enough to still be interesting. He's always in the center of the arena, and just like his ego, he only gets bigger with each phase. He starts of at a DJ booth, which is pretty normal, but then he grows to the point of being at the center of an asteroid field with LITERAL planets revolving around him. As a side note, the decision to combine a dance club and an outer space motif was brilliant. As for attacks, we got disco balls and later planets that spin around the arena trying to slam into you, barrages of asteroids, shockwaves, a giant rotating laser, and hell, he literally becomes a black hole when he's on his last legs, forcing you to either dodge or parry the space debris that flies at you. Overall, this makes for a kickass first boss, and honestly, one of the best first bosses I've seen a while, and DJSS proves that you can do something spectacular with them.
