Soundwave · 12:59am Nov 1st, 2020

Hey, guys! This evening, I want to talk about my favorite Decepticon and one of my favorite Transformers of all time... SOUNDWAVE!! In my opinion, he is the absolute best Decepticon that Megatron could ever ask for, and it is a shame that he is neither a Decepticon leader nor Megatron’s second-in-command. I love his vocoder/autotune voice that he is well-known for alongside his undivided loyalty to the Decepticon cause and to Megatron. His intelligence and his emotionless, monotone attitude won me over. If there is one thing that I really wish would be done for Soundwave, it is for someone to make him the main villain of a Transformers movie or even better... a Soundwave movie to explain his origins and why he became a Decepticon. I would love for that to happen!

As you can see above, this version of Soundwave is my favorite incarnation of him of all time. In fact, this was the series that introduced me to Soundwave. I never even heard of Soundwave in general until I watched Transformers: Animated back in 2008. Boy, I was so fascinated by this guy, and I love how they handled his character and his rise to villainy. He originated as a simple music toy for Sari Sumdac with the intention of making her happy with great music. It was all fun and games until Megatron revisioned him to become a self-aware Decepticon. Thus, he grew from a loved child’s toy to now a feared Decepticon revolutionary. He is just... so awesome!! I would place him as one of my favorite villains next to Joker and Thanos.

Even better, the writers gave him more spotlight by making him the main antagonist in the season 1 episode “Sound and Fury” and in the two-part episode in season 3 “Human Error” which is my favorite episode in season 3. He was a threat on his own and made great challenges for the Autobots. That... is amazing. That’s why I feel so happy in making him the main villain in my current story: The Inner Conflict. Jeff Bennett was great as Soundwave in this series (And other characters too like Prowl)!

Now for the Bayverse Soundwave. That Soundwave is a 50/50 for me personally because of his personality and design. In Revenge of the Fallen, he was in satellite mode with the task of locating the Allspark shard and send his minion Ravage to revive Megatron with the shard. First off, that design spoke volumes of his personality and position as the Communications Officer like in G1. Although we didn’t see him in robot mode, he still had those recognizable features: the visor and the mouthplate. But then that changed...

In Dark of the Moon, he scanned a Mercedes car which gave him an impressive robot mode. But then... he somehow got an actual face with NO visor and an actual mouth. WHAT?? That’s the ONLY I hate about that design. I can forgive his minimal screen time and dialogue though. Strange that he was speaking in his Dr. Claw voice with no vocoder in both films. Haha, at least Frank Welker did a great job voicing him in the films, in Prime (for the catchphrase alone), in RID 2015, and in G1.

As for the other versions of Soundwave, I like the G1 Soundwave and Prime Soundwave as well. Prime Soundwave however has a very mediocre design and never spoke until he uttered his catchphrase: “Soundwave superior, Autobots inferior.” Best catchphrase from the best Decepticon. Still, he didn’t really appeal that much to me besides his silent but deadly persona. In my opinion, he is slightly overrated. Cyberverse Soundwave is... okay. His voice was a bit off, but he had a decent personality. I don’t even want to talk about Cybertron Soundwave. Soundwave from the Cybertron games has an awesome design, but he also has the same bland personality from G1 Soundwave. He’s still cool though. Soundwave from the Bumblebee movie is cool too. If he gets to play the main villain in either the Bumblebee sequel or in the Cybertron movie, I’m all for it!! LET ME KNOW WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!

Siege Soundwave? Ughhh... awful, awful, AWFUL voice acting. That’s all.

So yeah, Animated Soundwave wins for me!! What are your thoughts on this badass?

Peace!

Soundwave is my favorite, too.

What a coincidence! "Transformers: Animated" introduced me to Soundwave too!
