The New Mutants-Review (Spoilers) · 10:42pm Aug 28th, 2020
I thought The New Mutants was a great film! The film is co-written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars; Stuck in Love) and it is based on the 1982 graphic novel of the same name by Chris Clermont and Bob McLeod. The film features great characters, the effects were fine, the editing was fine, the score was good, the writing and direction was also good. The film stars stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, and Adam Beach.
After her home was destroyed and her father (Beach) was killed by an unknown entity, Danielle “Dani” Moonstar (Hunt) wakes up in a mental institution where she meets the building’s sole doctor named Cecilia Reyes (Braga) who is also the caretaker of the institution and it’s patients. Dani meets the patients named Rahne Sinclair (Williams), Illyana Rasputin (Taylor-Joy), Sam Guthrie (Heaton), and Roberto “Bobby” da Costa (Zaga). Dani and the rest of the patients have one thing in common, they’re all Mutants. Reyes is keeping all of the Mutants in the institution so she can help control their powers and will release them once they are capable of controlling their powers. Dani doesn’t know what her powers are and they could be very dangerous and it can harm everybody in the institution. Dr. Reyes may not be a trusting person since she and her superiors have a hidden agenda.
The film deals with themes such as control, fear, guilt, family, friendship, bravery, love, facing the past, moving forward, trust, forgiveness. It’s been almost three years since I saw the first trailer for this film and after many delays, I thought this was a great film. Not the best X-Men or X-Men related film but it’s still a great film. Thus ends the 20th Century Fox (Studios)/ Marvel X-Men films that began in 2000.
3.5 out of 4 stars.
