One Bad Apple comments (SPOILERS abound) · 6:49pm Nov 24th, 2012
Well, just finished watching it (actually, watched it when aired initially, but wanted to comment on few other things as well, if doing this, so had to wait for Youtube version) and... better than I expected, I suppose. Must admit wasn't looking forward to it (as stated in previous blog), cause felt last thing we needed was another Diamond Tiara-esque character. Always thought Silver Spoon was better than her, given her behavior at end of Family Appreciation Day and Ponyville Confidential, in theory, cause she wasn't shown much beyond the opening scenes, but this episode seemed to reinforce her being a definite wanna-be in teasing the Cutie Mark Crusaders. From preview clip I saw, thought there was something more to Babs, since she seemed okay until those two bothered her over her lack of a cutie mark. Glad I was right!
When I heard about the Harvest Day Parade (Equestria’s version of like Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving parade? Been wondering if there’d be such a day, though of course without eating turkey or any meat) and such, couldn’t help but think of the Summer Sun Celebration, for some reason. Even though they aren’t probably related or even close to the same thing. And nice to see Sweetie Belle finally use magic, even if it was only for a second and she sparkled/struggled, when she said, "I'm so excited, I could burst!" Felt like Babs wasn't all that impressed when the CMC tried to show off their clubhouse, which may have led to her joining Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon (something hadn't initially expected, again until saw preview clip). And felt kinda sorry for them, I suppose, at that point.
I felt Sweetie Belle was best/wisest pony in this episode (and that's saying something, considering Apple Bloom gave Zecora a chance before anypony else in Season 1), considering that she was the only one who wanted to tell Applejack from beginning (thought from preview clip that they all would keep it until Applejack likely spotted Babs bullying them), but the others outvoted and wouldn't let her. Song I hadn't expected, was kinda catchy even if a bit repetitive in lyrics a few times. Not the best, but it fit for the moment! And honestly, like the CMC at the end, couldn't help wondering if her name wouldn't have been better off being BAD Seed, and not Babs Seed. Hoped we'd see more examples of bullying in real time, not in just a song, but only so much can do with 30 minutes minus time for commercials, as have said to fellow brony/fan of the show. And then, felt she went overboard by kicking Apple Bloom and the others out of their clubhouse, plus her own bed. Which should've seen coming, if Babs was bullying her, but I didn't. Not sure where they met up after that (Sweetie Belle's parents' house?), but had hoped things would improve by that point. And I hoped/thought that near the end, Applejack or one of the others might have a moment to see Babs picking on them, would give a stern talking to and she would explain importance of family or Babs would explain her actions. But was blown out of the water when they decided to fight back!
Then, when they decided to make the float booby-trapped, was surprised when AJ revealed about Babs' story being similar to theirs, in being picked on a bit (even if only a couple do it to the CMC, and more supposedly for Babs). Which makes me wonder WHY she kept it secret in the first place, if thought the CMC weren’t trustworthy enough to be told and keep it to themselves. Had expected things to get worse by that point or CMC to get in trouble if couldn't stop it in time, but then they did it. And must say, use of some technology in non-pony drawn ride was surprising, not sure if it's a shoutout to our fandom... since they were able to speed up, even though it might not be the first case of such, but first that I can safely say paid attention to noticing. And Pinkie being silly and having float made of actual vegetable was surprising, considering she's all about the sweets normally. Though was a little careless of her to relax while the parade was going on, even if the CMC were there, but eh.
Well, the ending was more different than I expected as previously stated here, but still good! As I had hoped would fix whatever caused the issues between the Cutie Mark Crusaders and Babs Seed by the end, considering the nature of the show. And hoped she might stick around longer, but if has family back home, guess she would go back. Was awesome how she stood up to Diamond and Silver and pushed them into the mud, and I hope someday we get to see Diamond's mother (or possibly Silver's) that was revealed. Had hoped we'd get a letter either by Babs or one of the CMC, but eh. Can't have it all, I suppose.
Overall, not one of my more favorite episodes, even if wasn't supposed to focus on any of the Mane 6 and was supposed to teach a lesson as normal (which could've been avoided and had some quality crusading time with her on-screen), but still good. Hope we can get another episode with her someday joining CMC in an episode for their next attempt at rapid crusading for cutie marks, if possible. But not entirely counting on that and will rely on stories and such. Now to wait for next week's, with the return of Trixie as even bigger bitch, supposedly. Should be not looking forward to that one either, yet I'm curious to see how things unfold and if POSSIBLY does a 180 and becomes better pony and/or stays in Ponyville. Doubtful, but one can hope, no?
On an unrelated note: No new news on first story ETA, though did have an idea within last week about short one-shot of aftermath of Too Many Pinkie Pies episode. Though probably won't submit that, if I do/finish it first, since would like to finish and/or submit first ever chapter of first ever pony story I've written first that again mentioned in previous blog post.
