Onward-Review (Spoilers) · 6:46pm Mar 6th, 2020
I thought Onward was a great film! The 22nd film from Pixar Animation Studios; the film was co-written and directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University). The direction and writing is great. The visuals are also great as well as the themes. The film features a great cast. The film stars Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer.
The film takes place in a world where Elves, Wizards, Unicorns, and other mythical creatures exist. A young Elven but (Holland) wants to be a better person while also wanting to know more about his father, whom he never got the chance to see since he died before he was even born. On his 16th birthday, his mother (Dreyfus) gives him and his older brother (Pratt) their father's wizard staff. They also discover a spell that their father created in which they can bring him back alive for one whole day. The younger brother unleashes the spell but couldn't control it which results in only bringing back their father's lower half of his body back. The spell needs to be created by a very rare gem and the brothers embark on a road trip with their father in order to find the gem and see their father entirely before it's too late.
The film explores themes such as brotherhood, family, parental figures, dealing with the loss of a loved one, remembering the past while moving forward, looking up to idols, standing up for yourself, receiving help, trust, hard work, seeking goals, being yourself while being a better person, cherishing every moment with those you care and love, seeking adventure, taking risks. I highly recommend this movie.
