Dusk and Rune Sneak Preview · 8:24pm Jan 20th, 2019

Hello to you all my readers,
Now, in regards to my most recent blog post, I have also decided to give out a small sneak peek of Dusk and Rune Chapter 1. Nothing too revealing, but something to show you all that the story is back in business and that I will make all the efforts I can to get it published as soon as I can.
So please, enjoy:

Once upon a time, in a magical land called Equestria, there were two regal sisters who ruled together; and created Harmony for all the land. To do this, the eldest used her power to raise the Sun at dawn. The younger, brought out the Moon to begin the night. Thus the two maintain balance for themselves and their subjects. All with different types of ponies. As time went on, the younger sister became resentful. The ponies relished and played in the day her sister brought forth. But shunned and slept through her beautiful night. One fateful day, the younger sister refused to lower the Moon to make way for the Dawn. The elder sister tried to reason with her. But the bitterness in the young one’s heart transformed her into a wicked mare of darkness; Nightmare Moon. She vowed she would shroud the land in eternal night. Reluctantly, the eldest resorted to using the most powerful power known to ponykind; the Elements of Harmony. Using the magic of the Elements of Harmony, she defeated her younger sister, and banished her permanently to the Moon. The elder sister took on responsibility for both the Sun and Moon and Harmony has been maintained in Equestria for generations ever since.

Canterlot, the capital kingdom of Equestria, seat of power for the elder sister, known to her subjects and all kingdoms as Princess Celestia. Within this massive mountain based city, unicorns from across the land come to live within the ancient nobilities, or to study at the Princess’ own school of magic and higher learning. There, magic is studied and mastered to peeks unheard of in any era, and among the countless students was a lone, purple unicorn stallion sitting in the courtyard. He was resting along a large apple tree and reading a somewhat musty book. He was dressed in a white long sleeve, covered by a lighter purple sweater vest; bearing an emblem of a white and violet star, but held an expression of great interest in the book.

“Hmmm, the Elements of Harmony?” A lone purple unicorn stallion questioned a loud, looking at the illustrations in the book he was reading. Getting up, he wiped some dirt from his beige pants. “I know I’ve heard of them before.” Scratching his head, he tried to fix his somewhat messy darker blue hair, trying not to ruin the little bits of pink and purple that covered a few sections of his head. Looking up, almost at the vast emptiness of the clear sky as he contemplated. “But where?”

Sighing, the unicorn was ready to leave, when no sooner had he gathered his bag had an arm wrap itself around him, resting on his shoulder. The unicorn was not too surprised about this, not even flinching as he turned his head to see the smiling grin of another unicorn stallion. This one was blue with a brown mess of hair, shimmering glasses and was wearing a much heavier dark blue hoodie and black pants; which were a rather odd choice for the warm summer the land was in the middle of.

“Heyya Dusk.” The unicorn spoke, showing his tone was a mix of chuckles and smiles as he talked. “Whatcha got there? Something interesting?”

“Hello Rune.” Dusk replied, politely removing Rune’s arm from his shoulder as he turned and faced his companion. “Anyways, I’m a little busy with some research. Is there something you needed?”

“So straight to the point, no fun at all.” Rune chuckled, then nodded. “Okay, well, I came because Moondancer is throwing a party and I was invited.”

“Moondancer hates you, remember.” Dusk sighed, knowing that whatever Rune was talking about was some other hairbrain scheme. “She would never invite you, not after last time.”

“It was only an exploding cake…” Rune coughed, trying to muffle the last part of his sentence. “...that ruined the dress she was trying to show off to you…” He then composed himself. “But anyways, the thing is. You’re the one invited, and I’ll be your plus one.”

“Sorry, not interested.” Dusk replied, turning to walk away. “I got a lot of studying to catch up on.”

“Alright, I’ll swing by sometime.” Rune nodded, waving his friend off. “Say hi to Spike for me.”

Running along the city, Dusk ignored literally everypony he could. Not nodding, smiling, or even waving to anypony that saw him running off. His mind and focus was only on one place, his dormitory. As a student at Celestia’s school, he was given a decent place to stay. But unlike any of the other students, Dusk was Princess Celestia’s protege. So he access to a much more lavish apartment tower, filled with books and materials for his research. But he did not live alone. Spike, a young dragon lived with the unicorn, as a surrogate brother, and number one assistant.

“Spike! Spike!” Dusk called, slamming the front door open as he burst in the entryway. Hearing some groans from behind the door, the unicorn looked behind it. “Spike?” Nearly smashed partly in the wall between the door was the purple and green dragon, holding what seemed to be a destroyed present. He groaned a little more before pulling himself from the wall and walking over to the unicorn. “There you are.” Though Dusk cared about Spike, this was not one of those moments. “Quick, find me that old copy of Predictions and Prophecies.” Looking to the dragon, he noticed the present. “What’s that for?”

“Well, it was a gift for Moondancer.” Spike replied, opening the smashed box to see his gift was destroyed. “Rune said we were going to a party.”

“Oh Spike. You shouldn’t always believe what that guy says.” Dusk sighed in response, going through book after book. “Besides, we have much more important things.”

“I thought we were on a break?” Spike asked, tossing the destroyed gift aside as he walked over to Dusk. “I mean it’s Summer.”

Not even responding, Dusk’s horn ignited a magical aura. Numerous books from the numerous shelves floated over to the unicorn. He grunted in frustration as he could not locate the book he was looking for. He was always more of an introverted stallion, though Spike and Rune often tried to get him out to meet ponies and make friends, Dusk was stubborn; caring more for isolated research and study than parties and other events.

“No, no, no, no, no!” Dusk was getting more and more frustrated, nearly tossing the books aside as he failed to locate the book he wanted. “Spike!”

“It’s right here.” Spike replied, holding a worn and old looking book. “Calm down.”

“Ah!” Dusk replied, wasting no time to yank the book and Spike down to the ground with his magic. While the unicorn wandered to read, the dragon sighed as he was left to put the books back on the shelves. Flipping through the book, he tried to find what he was searching for. “Elements, elements, elements, ah! Elements of Harmony...see Mare in the Moon?”

“Mare in the Moon?” Spike asked, putting some more books up. “But that’s an old pony’s tale.”

“Mare, mare...aha!” Dusk smiled, turning the pages to what he was looking for. “The Mare in the Moon, a myth from olden pony times, a powerful pony who wanted to rule Equestria. Defeated by the Elements of Harmony and imprisoned in the Moon. Legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year, the stars will aid in her escape. And she will bring about nighttime eternal.” He pulled back from the book at this realization, and shock how this knowledge is not more well known. “Spike, do you know what this means?” Spike shook his head before being handed a scroll and quill. “Take a note please. To the Princess.”

My dearest Teacher,
My continued study of pony magic has led me to discover that we are on the precipice of disaster. For you see, the mythical Mare in the Moon is in fact Nightmare Moon. And she’s about to return to Equestria. And bring with her, eternal night. Something must be done to ensure this terrible prophecy never comes true. I await your quick response.
Your faithful student,
Dusk Shine

“Alright, that should do it.” Spike replied, rolling up the scroll before blowing his green fire at the parchment. But unlike normal fire, his was enchanted where any scroll he blew fire on would be magically sent to Princess Celestia, and she in turn could send letters through him. “But don’t get your hopes up, I doubt she’ll have time to…” He coughed for a moment, feeling a letter was already coming. With a fiery burp, a new scroll burst from smoke and flame.

“Nonsense.” Dusk replied, grabbing the scroll. “Tomorrow is the thousandth day and I know she’ll want to take immediate action.”

My dearest, most faithful student Dusk Shine,
You know that I value your diligence and trust you completely. But you simply must stop reading those musty old books. My dear Dusk, there is more to a young pony’s life than studying. So I’m sending you to supervise the preparations of the Summer Sun Celebration in this year’s location; Ponyville. And I have an even more essential task for you to complete. Make some friends.
Your teacher and mentor,
Princess Celestia

What powers such a powerful power that could power through the power-hungry powerhouse's power?

Other than that, I thought it was a little odd how it seemed to be pretty much like the original show, except with Rune showing up instead of those other mares.

Well this revamped Dusk and Rune will follow the show. So every chapter is basically the episode of the Season. But I still plan on adding in my own twist, turns, and surprises in both the season connected stories and my own original stories.
The format I plan to follow is like this:
Season -> Original Story -> Season -> Original Story... and so on.
And because Rune is a main character, things will be different. How certain things are approached, how some resolutions are solved, etc. As well as expand my lore to be more than just a cut and paste of the show. The Canon Seasons are just a helpful skeleton guideline, while I still want to add my own meats, fats, and skin to this.

In this alternate universe, does Spike also wear clothing? Just asking.

This is alternate universe, and thank you for the reminder, I forgot to give him clothing. :moustache:

Hi friend, sorry for the inconvenience, but how can I read "Dusk and Rune"?

It fully needs to be written. Things have been complicated for a long time, I have every intention to continue. Things just keep coming up.
