I've rewritten this blog like three times now trying to find the right words to explain what im thinking...I really need to get this out.
To make it simple I watched "Fame and Misfortune" today...and it hit me pretty hard.
I've always had a tendency to get deep into the meaning behind each episode, and they usually make the basic morals rather blatant but this one was...different.
I think this one got to me so much because I've seen this kind of thing a lot this past year.
I saw it with Paramore and their Hard Times album, detailing what it's like to be put on a pedestal and the pressure that comes with it.
I've seen it multiple times in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. That fanbase is so divided that there is almost always a split reception between games.
I saw it again in the Call of Duty series with the recent WWII instalment, with the rumors that it was only made to please fans, to make a "safe" entry into the series.
And finally it reminded me of one of the first dark MLP fanfics i ever read. Back when I had only seen a few episodes and all my fanfic reading was done on FF.net. The entire plot of that story was based on how out of control a fanbase can get and the consequences of their actions.
Fame and Misfortune really made that sink in for me. It layed it all out so blatantly I would have to be blind to not see it. I would like to think I've taken care to not get too caught up in a fanbase again (story for another time) but this is a good reminder. One I won't soon forget.
