Finnish, According to Me · 8:49pm Nov 1st, 2012
As you may or may not know, random reader/teacher/classmate-who-constantly-annoys-me-with-this-question (You know who you are)
I am Finnish, and a large amount of people (not on fimfiction) ask me to teach them more than simple phrases, I deny them, and will be putting this up to stop the same bloody conversation from happening again.
Finnish is not close to Englsih, Spanish, French, German, or any other laungauge that you all know. It is gender neutral, very direct, and very, very screwy. Written Finnish is almost completely different from spoken Finnish, for a multitude of reasons.
1.) Many of our words are long and tedious, thus we will use shortened versions often. Yks in place of yksi for example.
2.) As I said. It is a terse and direct laungauge, thus the anticsocial Finn steroetype. An example being, instead of dentist, we would say hammaslääkäri. Which literally translates into "tooth doctor".
3.) It is, as also stated above, general neutral. Which, as hard to believe as it is, has caused people to struggle with any form of teaching I may have attempted to give them.
But, do not be discouraged, Finnish is a beautiful, melodious laungauge. Finnish culture, along with the tongue, inspired J.R.R. Tolkiens elves, and I wholeheartedly recommend you go out and at least listen to a Finnish song or two, maybe read the Kalevala. (Anyone who knows me in real life can borrow my English translation of it)
Welp, that's my thoughts my laungauge and culture. Posted on fimfiction to troll/attempt to get my classmates/teachers/internet friends into MLP.
