So instead of writing on Friday... I went and saw the movie. That means an additional day delay of Sunday for posting since my editor didn't get a chance to read it.
As a reward for your patience... a spoiler-free review.
As for the movie. It was pretty good and I'll say that from a non-fan perspective. The animation takes some getting used to but it is really beautiful overall. I'd say the movie's greatest strength is that both villains are well done and definitely fit their roles. It is also downright hilarious. I haven't laughed that much in a theater in a long time. It wasn't just fan humor either, most of the scenes I found funny so did the rest of the patrons there, if their laughter was any indication. The biggest weakness would be the Mane Six had some moments that anyone familiar with the show would view as very out of character. I can see why they did because it would have been a very short movie otherwise. I'm also unsure of when this movie is supposed to take place. Still, it is a must see if you are on the fence on whether to go or not. At the very least do it to boost the box office numbers to help the show. I give it high scores for the animation and all but the first song were good. It also gets high marks for having a cohesive plot and I felt there was enough mixture of story and action that the movie progressed fairly. I docked points for not staying true to character as much as I'd like and because one of the villains screen-time was much less than I'd preferred. If I had to give it a fair rating it would be a 7-8/10.
