    Bucket List Results

Remember the spring break bucket list I posted about a month ago? Well, it's time to look at the results. And I'd say I did quite well. Especially if you consider how much I added since the initial post. Who knows, I might be able to cross off a few more the next couple days, as my initial plan to be already playing Persona 5 Royal at this point took quite a hit.

    Goddammit Nintendo

Just casually releasing a new Direct.
And only half-revealing the next Smash fighter. Though I'm glad for the franchise.

The MLP movie · 4:46pm Oct 5th, 2017

Because it came out here one day earlier, I just came back from the MLP movie. And yes I liked it a lot. I can only recommend to watch it.

Behind the break are some random thoughts, comments and ramblings about the movie. Beware that I will talk about spoilers. Proceed with caution.

You have been warned.

First, I watched the movie in german, so I can't comment on the english voices and songs (except for Sia's songs which they kept english). The german dub is good and the translated songs are at least decent.

The new characters are all pretty cool. Grubber is funny, Tempest is a badass villain with a good backstory (take that Starlight), Skystar gave me some serious Arielle-flashbacks, Celano is a freakin' sky pirate and I'm pretty sure Capper is a teaser for a certain G1-villain returning.
Oh, and by the way, Bronies are now officially Furries (I'm just waiting for the Celano clop).

Twilight is clearly the protagonist. Pinkie is the deuteragonist and really gets to show her insane side. Rainbow and Rarity gave their respective moments (the latter is mostly played for laughs). Spike's only important scenes are telling everyone Twilight got marenapped and being a (literal) flamethrower. Applejack and Fluttershy are... there, both could have been removed and except for removing two or three jokes nothing would have been changed. And it seemed like Fluttershy completely forgot how to fly. Also #raisedinabarn.

Then the actual villain, the Stormking... Kinda missed potential. They put a huge focus on Tempest and she was GREAT, definitely one of the highlights. I think they again wanted to try the Sombra approach, where they build up the villain for the whole episode/movie. And the buildup would have been great, if not for two reasons: 1. They show him right at the beginning in a (admittedly funny) scene. 2. He just doesn't have the personality for that kind of villain; he relies on Tempest all the time until his obvious betrayal. But props for actually killing him off... I think... His fate might be even worse...

Another thing I like is just how fast they cut to the main plot. MLP episodes tend to have long prologs and epilogs. Not this movie, it starts with a big panning shot through the streets of Canterlot showing several cameos by famous side characters (including Coco, Cheese Sandwich and Starlight), then a short scene with Twilight, then a song by the mane six, then the villains already attack the town. Same with the end, villain defeated, princesses saved, cut to Sia song, short talk, credits.

Of course lots and lots of great worldbuilding. We finally got some non-pony races and the world is not just friendships and rainbows.

And if someone actually reads this before watching, I'm pretty sure one of the seaponies was Sunny Flare, can somebody confirm this?

And the first thing I did after coming home was listening to the english version of "Open up your eyes" and DAMN this song is great. Probably best villain song in the series.

And that covers it. Again, go watch this movie! And if Season 8 really ties into the movie, then we're in for a treat.
This has been Marwile waiting for a story with Celano in One Piece (you know you want it)

I agree with a lot of your perspective, but how are Tempest and Starlight's backgrounds that distinctive? Magically powerful unicorn is traumatized as a child when she feels abandoned by her friends, dedicates life to being in total control of those around her as a way of compensating.

Starlight: one friend gets cutie mark, goes to school and doesn't spend time with her anymore, decides to create equality cult and destroys timeline when that fails
Tempest: loses horn, can't control magic anymore, everyone avoids her out of fear, leaves village, psychological rambling about how she can't feel like a full pony without her horn, joins guy that promises to restore it when she helps
Though I never said they are distinctive, I meant that Tempest's backstory is better and makes more sense

4688012 They seem pretty similar to me. Tempest doesn't seem to mind to mind that her horn doesn't work until exactly 2 friends don't spend time with her anymore, so she leaves the village and wanders off like Starlight does. The only real difference is that Tempest felt rejected by 2 friends instead of 1.
