Ookay. FimFiction 4.0, the new site redesign that, for me, appeared this morning (for reference, I live in AEST, and it’s 7:27pm as of writing this sentence - the site went down at 8:30pm last night). I also know I should probably put this in a group, or forum, or whatever, if I want an admin to see this, but I don’t particularly care for such things (nor can I find them). Anyway...
I don’t hate it, but I don’t particularly love it either - I just want to get this out of the way now. I do like the blue menubar (you know, ‘GROUPS/Username/SETTINGS/LIBRARY/HELP/CHAT), and it does look sleek. I’ve also found that you can click a paragraph, and it gets highlighted and options come up. Cool, but somewhat annoying if you’re only wanting to quote a single sentence, or a few words. There’s also a ‘chapter read progress bar’ that appears, should you leave a chapter half-finished. Definitely could be useful.
However...the site redesign did get rid of a couple of things I found helpful, like the character icons detailing who’s in the story at a quick glance, and the different colours of the genre indicators (’Dark’ was red, ‘Adventure’ was green, ‘Comedy’ was orange/gold, etc.).
Why remove these?
With 4.0, all the genre indicators are the same blue colour, and the characters are only listed by name in a green box, next to the genre indicators.
Then there’s the matter of removing the page selector (you know, the buttons that let you go to Page 2, Page 3, Page 4, Page 19, Page 20, Page 21) at the top of the Library/Search pages. Now you have to go past ten stories to get to these buttons. Sure, not that big of a deal, but definitely annoying that I can’t just press 3 if I already know what’s on Page 1.
So yeah, it’s an alright update.
