I want to write a horror story but want to try something different.... A Reader Shaped story.
The idea being that I write the initial chapter and end with a choice or a open scenario and the readers can post a course of action... I.E. protagonist is running along rickety bridge when companion falls through and is barely hanging on when monster A shows up... Does Pro run and save buddy or nope the fack outta there.
Sounds kinda like how my story for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going tbh...

Obviously the protagonist should stay and save the companion. One of them has to be a unicorn, though not a very powerful one. When the protagonist saves the companion, the companion uses some sort of magic spell that would stagger the horror that is chasing after them long enough for the protagonist and the companion to get some distance from the horror and for the horror to lose momentum. That would be the story line that the protagonist would be the hero and in turn be a likeable character and give character development with the companion.
The other option that you gave would be if you wanted to have the protagonist to be a coward and this would work very well if the companion lost would return for some sort of revenge agenda or as a part of the original horror that is pursuing the protagonist. Again, this would make the protagonist not likeable and would then make them deserve what the companion had in store for a punishment or revenge.
