How We See Our Ponies · 4:11am Feb 13th, 2017

I’ve been reading an old devotional book I got back when I was a teenager. It was called The Me I Want to Be, by John Ortbrg. It's about how we can get stagnant and become satisfied with where we are, rather than what we could be. Something in it really stood out to me.

Nothing Spiritual, of course. It helped me write ponies.

You see, one of the chapters in the book had a personality quiz. I was bored when I was reading the book, and I took it as some of the Mane Six instead of myself. Something that became apparent to me was how easily the same pony can fit so well into multiple categories. For example,

Reformer:
Strengths: Internal standard if what’s good, noble, and beautiful. She can lead others to live better lives.
Weaknesses: Can be prideful. She holds herself to a high standard, which leads to a secret feeling of inadequacy.

This is a dead ringer for Twilight. But then I saw the next page:

Thinker:
Strengths: a discoverer inventor, and lover of logic. A passion for truth, even when it's costly.
Weaknesses: Convictions of being right can lead to arrogance. Can be tempted to withdraw from relationships and love.

Twilight can fit both of these roles incredibly well. This is because, unlike us, she’s a fictitious talking unicorn. How she acts is always going to be affected by who her writer is and what kind of a story she’s in. Honestly, it can depend on where she is in her personal growth. One could argue that Twilight is a Thinker at the beginning of the show, and has evolved into a Reformer in the later seasons. Anyway, stuff like that can be an interesting way of looking at a character from an otherwise unseen angle.
