What type of story is Dogs, anyway?

I marked it as an Adventure, but that doesn't quite feel right. Sure, the Diamond Dogs are on an adventure into strange and foreign lands from their point of view, but does that count if they're treading ground with which the readers are already familiar? Since we're seeing the world through their eyes, I want this to feel like an adventure, but I'm not sure I've succeeded so far.

    Mare Doloris Ch. 18 edited

One of my readers was helpful enough to point out that the narrator forgets about the audio evidence he gathered in the previous chapter.* After reviewing, I find I agree that he shouldn't have done that. I made some edits and added some dialogue to the latest chapter (18: "Convalescence") in an attempt to fix this

Excerpt from a fic I was working on pre-fimfiction

Sorry for the long lack of updates to both stories. By way of apology, and to try and get myself motivated again, I present an excerpt from an old, old fic I started working on way back between seasons 2 and 3. If you remember some of my old blog posts, this is from the HiE that got to around 90 pages before I decided it needed a rewrite. In this scene, the story's major villains, recently

    Unofficial Mare Doloris Theme Song

If it was in a a different medium, each episode would close to this ditty by Bombadil. I could see parts of it applying to both principal characters in different ways.

Readers: Does Spirits Need a Dark Tag?

After I published chapter eleven of The Spirits of Harmony, reader Majk commented to say:

I'm really having a blast reading this story but methinks it deserves a dark tag. All that mindbucking done by spirits is kinda grim and gets more scary the more you think about it (but that could be just me).

as to what was most disturbing:

Yes, I am writing things. · 8:29pm Sep 23rd, 2012

I've got four stories trying to escape from my mind onto the screen at the moment, which is annoying. Whenever I'm working on one, the other three are either vying for my attention or slowly fading away in a mental corner, looking at me reproachfully.

Number one, which has the most actual existence right now, is called The Spirits of Harmony. Basically, Twilight tests the theory that there is an anti-Discord. She's sort of right. A harmonious kind of mayhem ensues.

Two is a reworking of a HiE first-contact story which got to around ninety pages last try before I ran it into a wall. One of the major conceits caused too much friction and left the bipedal protagonists without enough agency. Starting again with that dumb thing removed, we'll see if it can get anywhere.

Three's existence is largely based on whether #2 works out or not, because I suspect they'll have several of the same ideas. It's a soft sci-fi story whose science-y part is the idea that the next big advance in virtual reality and artificial intelligence is letting parts of the user's own brain do most of the heavy lifting. Definite inspiration from The Matrix and Inception. Folks use this cybernetic technology to, among other things, mess around in virtual depictions of their favorite fictional settings. In the story, a brony suspects his non-brony roomie of planning to commit suicide, convinces him to visit virtual Equestria, and traps him in the simulation to keep him from going through with it. First-person from a journal kept by the roomie.

Four, the most recent idea, is a haunted house story. I really can't say more about it without a) planning it out more and, b) spoiling it.

Here's hoping these see the light of day, as I'm a bad and lazy writer who hasn't yet learned to outline.
