What a Lovely, Lonely Day · 1:46pm Dec 24th, 2016
Happy Christmas Eve, Merry Christmas, and a Happy Holidays to all who still quietly stalk my blog posts! I'm just gonna use this chance to talk about nothing, since I've been at work for over an hour and all that's happened is the rain. God, I love the rain!
So this year is lonelier than other years. As bad luck would have it, I was unable to secure proper off-time to head back to Texas and visit the family for the holidays. Well, not for Christmas Day, anyway - I've got a flight secured to take me down for New Year's instead. It ain't perfect, but it's what i was able to get. Still, that means that I am on my own for today and tomorrow.
I'm not too broken up about it. After all, half a year ago (you know, when all the job shiz went down?), I was basically living an introvert's dream: eight hours of work with sixteen hours of whatever else I wanted, which usually took the form of reading or games. I'm accustomed to being alone for long stretches of time, and hey, at least this year I have my brother's dogs to keep me company. The best company. So even though I won't be home for Christmas, it's not a total wash. (Plus, don't tell anyone, but this also gives me a chance to go back and do some after-Christmas shopping for slightly better deals on slightly worthy gifts. Don't judge me!)
I mean, hell, at least I'm not letting the stress and fatigue get to me. Like this one driver I saw this morning who wrecked their car. It wasn't too bad, thank goodness: it was still pre-dawn and the roads were wet and dark. This driver ahead of me apparently didn't realize they were in an exit lane until they were about twenty yards from the turning point. Of course they couldn't brake enough to stop on slick roads, so they ended up heading straight into the grass, plowing down the actual Exit sign in the process. It took them another fifty or sixty yards before they were able to stop. It sucks that it happened, but better that particular exit than the one after, which didn't even have grass. Nope, the exit I took had a drop just past its sign, so better to walk away from a lapse in attention than the alternative.
I dunno if it was actually stress or fatigue that got to that driver. Maybe they just didn't know the roads. Maybe it was mechanical failure. Anyway, that's really the end of that story. I'm just shootin' the breeze here.
