So....The Assassin's Creed Movie... · 10:58pm Dec 21st, 2016
I saw it today with my brother. Here's my impromptu review:
Assassin's Creed? More like Assassin's Meh.
Spoilers below, but not anything too spoilery.
Seriously, what is up with the present timeline? Why is it that people STILL think that is what we, the viewers/players, want to see? The movie, being 2 hours and 20 minutes, has about 26 minutes worth of the Assassin's (Aguilar) story. The rest takes place wandering Abstergo and being around Templar agents who whisper and say confusing things like they are in a M. Night Shymalan film. I was eagerly waiting for one to say "I see dead people."
The Animus sequences were so short, they filled all the dialogue in Spanish.
So is Aguilar a good character? A good Assassin to add to the growing roster? Who knows, he only says four lines in Spanish, all dealing with the Creed, and is used as a device to further the plot.
Is the action good? Heck yeah! Every scene in the Animus is filled with atmosphere. It's great, but like I said, it's like seeing a trailer for the movie you want to see within the movie you are seeing. They even cut a lot of the action through showing the present day constantly. You see Aguilar stab a guy and then Callum in present day do it too through the Animus car-manufacturing arm.
As you know, I love the concept between the Templars and Assassins and all of their grey areas. None of that is discussed. Assassins = freewill, Templar = not freewill. Besides the Creed they repeat multiple times, they never really look into the differing philosophies. Assassins keep saying "the Templar will take freewill away" and never reference their own cultist mindsets, in which, this movie shoves down your throat. These Assassins seem like drones for a cause they barely understand than actual individuals trying to help humanity.
If you know Assassin's Creed lore, everything in the movie makes sense. If you haven't looked real deep into it or played only one game, it may be confusing.
So yeah, I mean, it's not terrible. Still best video game movie I've seen. If you've seen the trailers, you've seen the movie. There is hardly anything more than what they show in those trailers.
