Thank you.
Now on to my thoughts on the Season Six Finale.
I liked it. Definitely thought it was well executed.
I doesn't exactly start like a season finale. It's almost like a normal episode when Starlight mentions she's going to an event out of town, takes Trixie, etc. etc. It's not bad, it's just seems on a different beat from the rest of the episode, but it still does its job in setting up Starlight's character struggle. Once we're back in Ponyville, the mood instantly shifts into paranoia. Even though I easily guessed what was going on, I still felt all of the stress that Starlight (and eventually Trixie) did. The stakes are as high as they have ever been, with the also immediate capture of Ponyville, Canterlot, and the Crystal Empire. Our mains for the story then congregate. I thought there would be more party members than four, but since the episode delivered, I'm not disappointed that there weren't more characters. In fact, it probably would've crowded the episode to include other characters in the castle-storming. The infiltration is nice and compact; it does pretty well in keeping things moving, keeping the suspense, etc. etc. How are the characters' presences? Starlight and Trixie both give nice and different perspectives of being way in over your head, from the perspective of a leader, and from a follower. Discord is, well, Discord. Not much to say on that perspective, but I could pretty much hear the Fluttercorders squee when de Lancie delivers those lines where Discord finds out Fluttershy has been kidnapped and, yeah, I liked it too. Thorax is the most subdued. He's unsure of himself, and is the group's guide, but I can't think of any great moments or lines from him. As for the climax, the way in which Discord and Trixie are taken down are both pretty intense, I loved it. Of course I haven't mentioned Chrysalis yet, but this latest appearance, where she's the Chan with the Plan, (a much better plan than her last) and does everything she needs to. She stays behind the scenes as her master plan unfolds and succeeds, she puts the king in check (c wat i did dere ) forcing Starlight and Thorax to mate her with their next move. After Starlight and Thorax were forced and allowed to discover individuality, it's great to see them apply it to the Changeling Kingdom. Queen Chrysalis's exit was definitely properly handled. Unlike with Star in 5-26, there's no reason for her to accept their overtures of friendship, and so it's only proper that she retreats, while swearing revenge upon our heroes. Starlight and crew leave the newly crowned King Thorax and his colorful subjects to attend that gathering (THEOPPOSITEOFWHATWESAWBEFORE!THEOPPOSITEOFWHATWESAWBEFORE!). It's a nice wrap-up, showing us what Starlight has learned; and I love that Trixie and Discord actually get a scene after having worked together. Having new character interactions can open lots of new possibilities, and if they don't ever speak to each other again before the series ends, then at least we saw them interact here, and I'm fine with that. Overall, this is easily in the top two of Season Finales. Come to think of it, it's in the top two Season Bookends too.
So those are my thoughts on the finale. Now sit tight in your seats, because we're going to talk about those top twos. Another blog post incoming immediately, see you in a bit!
