Viva Las Pegasus review · 8:32am Sep 18th, 2016
Hello there. Another week, another episode. This week, we've got another Cutie Map episode. Earlier in the season, we got "Spice up your Life" which was another Cutie Map episode and in that review I mentioned how each of the CM episodes all follow a pattern of the Mane 6 show up, discover a problem, do what they each think is needed to fix the problem separately only to have it fail, they then realize how the proper way is to work together, and they solve the problem. So, how did this episode fair as a CM entry? Let's take a look. My thoughts below.
This episode broke the mold that I had previously mentioned. It was so refreshing to see an episode featuring the Cutie Map that didn't follow the prescribed formula that these episodes have fallen into and I hope it is an indicator of things to come. This episode also saw the return of Flim and Flam who thankfully didn't end up singing a song about how they were going to fix everything while making outrageous claims. I also loved how at the end of the episode, Flim and Flam both went back to the way they were before, showing that they really didn't learn anything about friendship or how to treat others anything other than as the fools that they see others as.
Another fun character was the villain of the episode, Gladmane. He reminded me of con artists in old style movies like "The Sting". He seemed too nice to be trustworthy (kind of like Flim & Flam). Another good thing about this episode were Fluttershy and Applejack. They were pretty entertaining together, which makes me wonder why we haven't seen more of it. The fact that it was through Fluttershy's ability to talk to animals and her desire to see the good in everypony along with Applejack's stubborn refusal to help the brothers that really make this episode shine. Unfortunately that is also where my major issue with the episode comes from.
This is pretty minor but it isn't to small as to not be worth mentioning. At the end of the episode, Fluttershy and Applejack basically go over what I just mentioned about them as if they didn't actually go through it. That seemed a little too on the nose for the show. It seemed to me to be like the writers were saying "hey this is how it worked out, in case you missed any of it". No, we didn't miss any of it, we just watched it. Other than that, this was a really good episode that is hopefully the direction of where they are taking the CM episodes, mainly new directions. That's about all for Viva Las Pegasus. Next week, we'll be looking at the Starlight from the past.
