Celestial Advice review · 5:34am Apr 17th, 2017
Hello there. I've decided to continue my reviews of the episodes that I started doing last year and now we have brand new episodes! This is an interesting review because, as you probably already know, there was no two-parter this season, but two standalone episodes.
First up was "Celestial Advice", a continuation of the season 6 finale with Starlight, Trixie, Discord, and (King) Thorax getting recognition for saving Equestria. Thanks to some manipulation by Discord, Twilight gets the idea that it's now time for Starlight to go off and study friendship somewhere else, similar to what Celestia did with Twilight back in the first episode.
I'll get back to that similarity in a minute but overall this episode was pretty fun. I enjoyed the manipulation Discord was able to cause, showing that he is still a trickster and that he loves doing it. I thought Twilight's fantasies about what would happen with Starlight were pretty funny as well, mostly because there is no probable reason to believe, as Spike points out, that Starlight would be pulled into a volcano or be beaten by a group of reformed changelings. Spike is always the level headed one, isn't he? Now to talk about something that I'm of split mind about: the interactions between Celestia and Twilight. Last season they focused on the dynamic between Twilight and Starlight and made obvious parallels between that and the Celestia and Twilight dynamic that existed in the first 3 seasons. With this episode, they still kept the focus on the dynamic but it was more from Celestia's point of view. We saw how Celestia was EXTREMELY conflicted about where to send Twilight and even that she was reluctant to send Twilight to Ponyville. I actually really enjoyed that part of their time together during this episode. It was drawing a connection between Celestia and Twilight rather than between Twilight and Starlight. Hopefully it's an indication of things to come, and we will get to see more of Celestia acting more naturally. That's it for "Celestial Advice". I did watch the other episode but it's getting late and I've got to go to bed. Probably will write my review of "All Bottled Up" tomorrow. Till then.
