[Metacritic Monday] Pokemon Diamond & Pearl · 8:07pm Sep 4th, 2016

It's been a while, so let's talk about the show for a bit.

Hello everyone! I'm your star-worthy host SuperKamek and welcome back to another episode of "Metacritic Monday", where I bitch and complain about people who bitch and complain. So, many of you are probably wondering where Metacritic Monday pissed off to, right? Well, I can answer that question with a simple phrase: "I'm not motivated enough". Oh, not by you guys, don't get me wrong! You all have been so supportive and patient with me, and I thank you all for it. However, I say motivated because doing this kinda show does take time, and I simply don't have the energy to put myself through writing an episode every week. However, I will still do my best to make sure you get your show and you're happy!

Please, please, PLEASE take note that I will not be ripping apart reviews that are actually legit. If someone dislikes a game for a reason, I'm all okay with that. What I'm NOT okay with is false information, like those stupid "0/10" reviews you find sometimes. Also take note that this is for entertainment and comedy purposes only, so I will be using hyperbole to exaggerate a few points I make. So, without further ado, let's delve into Metacritic Monday!

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, more specifically Pearl, were important games in my childhood. For one, they opened my mind up to strategy games and got me into the Pokemon franchise, but most importantly they made me love video games again after the disaster that was Crazy Chicken Adventures. This may be a biased, nostalgia-goggles view of the game, but I still have reasons why the games were as awesome as they were. For one, the physical/special split was probably the most important thing to happen to competitive play, and speaking of which the Masuda Method was introduced in this generation. A lot of really awesome Pokemon were here as well, and let's not forget Cynthia and her Garchomp!

But there are those people; those goddamn people who want nothing more than to extinguish this game from the history books. And we're taking a look at two of them in what could very well be my longest episode yet! So get your Pokeballs and your Potions at the ready, because we're once again delving into the land of stupid.

These quotes come from users "someonedoe" and "AshK" respectively.

The last games like red version and blue were good but all pokemon has ever done is just change a few things like new pokemon and new region but still its all ways the same thing beat the gym leaders then beat the eliet four and you beat the game always the same thing kinda sick and tired of the same stuff do not buy anymore pokemon games if youve beat one of the pokemon games.

They just added more levels and Pokemon, but there's very little to note. The new Pokemon look like they were really running out of ideas. They were going for quantity over quality. The way you're allowed to transport Pokemon from your GBA games is pretty cool (although it wouldn't work with the DSi because it has no GBA slot), however, a lot of Pokemon can only be obtained this way, so if you don't have those games, then forget it! There are also some Pokemon other than Mew you can't get at all like Lugia and Hoho, which are the ones in the Gold and Silver. I'm sure you would be allowed to get the missing ones in the Gold and Silver remakes, but if those were never made then you'd be stuck with an incomplete Pokedex. What ever happened to "Gotta catch 'em all?!" WHAT were they thinking? One nice thing I've got to say is that the Pokegear items are pretty cool. Puzzles are rare and feel uninspired. Sure there are a lot of Pokemon to collect, but it feels redundant because of how uninspired they are. There is no sense of discovery. The way you're allowed to trade online may seem like a brilliant idea, but everyone wants something insane like Regigigas while all you want is a Munchlax. A so-so game, but probably the worst in the series. Go play the ones for the Gameboy Color.

Let's get this said and done!

The last games like red version and blue were good

Hahahahahahahahaha! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!

but all pokemon has ever done is just change a few things

like new pokemon and new region but still its all ways the same thing

Yeah, I have to agree with you on that: It really is the same thing ALL WAYS, in every single direction.

beat the gym leaders then beat the eliet four and you beat the game

I think we might be missing a few steps here.

Like, for example:

Catching a fucking Pokemon first. :ajbemused:

always the same thing

Oh, well you spelled "always" fine here, so what the hell was up with last time, huh?!

kinda sick and tired of the same stuff

Then don't play the games.

Sorry, nothing is forcing you into playing another Pokemon game.

Try Sun and Moon! It's different!

do not buy anymore pokemon games if youve beat one of the pokemon games.

It is clear to me that this guy has no idea what a Pokemon game truly is.

Every main series installment brings forth brand new Pokemon to experiment with, brand new mechanics to learn, and sometimes new types to balance things out a bit. At least to me, every latest entry in the Pokemon franchise is greater than the last, or at least up to date with different things. X & Y, despite me not really liking the stories all that much, didn't stop me from loving the environments, the new Pokemon, the music and the PSS, which thank god GameFreak did.

So even if there's a game I don't really care for in the series, I can at least respect it for what it did for the Pokemon gameplay and metagame. This guy doesn't have any of that respect.

They just added more levels and Pokemon,

More levels? You mean Pokemon can go above Lv. 100?! Shit, why didn't anyone tell me?!

but there's very little to note.

Clearly.

Since you...

...noted it...

...WAIT A MINU-

The new Pokemon look like they were really running out of ideas.

There is a fine line between running out of ideas and getting creative with something or being original. I present to you three Pokemon that are from the fourth generation that are VERY creative and original.

Funnily enough they're all Ghost-types, but in order we have: Froslass, the Pokemon based off the Yuki-onna which is a Japanese snow spirit that kills travelers in the mountains; Rotom, the Pokemon that is literally a poltergeist and can possess various objects; and Giratina, the Pokemon that is literally the devil.

If that's not creative, I don't know what is!

They were going for quantity over quality.

Clearly not with the original Diamond and Pearl's piss-weak 150 Pokemon lineup, including TWO FIRE-TYPES.

The way you're allowed to transport Pokemon from your GBA games is pretty cool (although it wouldn't work with the DSi because it has no GBA slot)

Yeah, and it only got better as time went on.

however, a lot of Pokemon can only be obtained this way, so if you don't have those games, then forget it!

Whoa, no need to shout like that!

There are also some Pokemon other than Mew you can't get at all like Lugia and Hoho

I was gonna write a retaliation to this, but I couldn't stop thinking of this:

=

Hoho.

My life is complete.

which are the ones in the Gold and Silver.

Yes.

Thank you for reminding me: the Pokemon fan who clicked on your review to see what this game was like and consider on whether to get it or not, the same Pokemon fan who more than likely already has a lot knowledge on Pokemon.

Do you think of us as idiots, good sir?

I'm sure you would be allowed to get the missing ones in the Gold and Silver remakes,

Now hold on everyone, this sentence is building up to probably my favorite line in the entire review...

but if those were never made then you'd be stuck with an incomplete Pokedex.

And they still were, but hold on... here it comes...!!!

What ever happened to "Gotta catch 'em all?!" WHAT were they thinking?

OH YES!!! GOD YES!!! Ahhhh... that's good hate...

GameFreak was thinking that it was about time for a Gold and Silver remake, that's what. They intentionally made it so Lugia and Ho-oh were mostly unavailable at the time so they could come out with Heartgold and Soulsilver. It's always been about "Gotta catch 'em all", but it's also about sitting down like an adult and not whining and bitching when you have to wait for something.

Okay, sorry, that was my bliss for the day. Back to your regularly scheduled nonsense.

One nice thing I've got to say is that the Pokegear items are pretty cool.

You mean Poketch? Dude, did you even play the game? The least you could have done was a bit of research, yeah?

Puzzles are rare and feel uninspired.

Pokemon was never about the puzzles, it was about encapsulating innocent animals before forcing them to fight for you in parent-approved cock fights. Basic, everyday stuff, man; c'mon!

Sure there are a lot of Pokemon to collect, but it feels redundant because of how uninspired they are.

Un... inspired, huh...?

Yeah, no, you're totally right! Pokemon based off a famous Japanese myth? Nah, that's totally BORING! Electric fucking lion? Fuck that noise! Psychic elbow sword badass? What were they thinking?! LITERALLY SATAN?!?!

I think you and I have very different definitions of the word "uninspired".

There is no sense of discovery.

The way you're allowed to trade online may seem like a brilliant idea, but everyone wants something insane like Regigigas while all you want is a Munchlax.

Welcome to the GTS, a system immediately abused by players ALL over the world! Hope you have fun looking for that one, fucking Bidoof you wanted, because it'll cost you a Celebi.

A so-so game, but probably the worst in the series. Go play the ones for the Gameboy Color.

Not sure whether I should be appalled this guy had the audacity to call it a so-so game after he complained about it through most of his review, or if I should be sorry for everyone who grew up with Gold and Silver who have to deal with people like this in the Johto fandom. So, sorry about that Saiyan.

And that concludes today's Metacritic Monday! Did you enjoy the show? If so, leave a comment down below! Also, what are your thoughts on Pokemon Diamond and Pearl? Like it? Hate it? Really your choice, I won't blame you if you hate it. I'm not so nostalgia blind as to not see their plentiful shortcomings, many of which were thankfully fixed in Platinum. But you know what the best part is? It has been 10 years since we last explored Sinnoh. Sun and Moon are coming out soon.

Looks like it's almost time for me to head back home...

Yuki-onna which is a Japanese snow spirit that kills travelers in the mountains

vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/rosariotovampire/images/3/33/Gallery_24767_1515_90144.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120613010854&path-prefix=es

And as for those reviews, I'm gonna take a stab here and say...one of them is a 16 year old Sony/Microsoft fanboy whining about the other company, and the other is some 40 year old gen wunner who's line of thinking is, "It's different, therfore it sucks!"

Anyway, nice to see a Metacritic Monday again.

The nostalgia...
I spent so much time with Diamond, it introduced me to some of my favourite pokemon (*cough* Lucario *cough*), I comitted probably the dumbest gaming sin of my life:twilightblush:, the first game in which I beat the champ (by finally building a team:facehoof:), and you should have seen me freaking out when I got BOTH for my eleventh birthday:pinkiegasp:

4191833
Wow... Where's that Yuki-onna from? :pinkiegasp:
And thanks man! Always great to hear from you again!

4191837
I wish I was there! :rainbowlaugh:
But I would have been younger than you. :applejackconfused:

I think I told everyone this story before, but back when I was a shitty little kid playing my copy of Pearl I found a Shiny Geodude! Not understanding what exactly it was, nor knowing what the typings were at the time, I sent out my fully evolved Empoleon and used Water Gun on it.

I spent a good two hours under that fucking bridge looking for another one, not understanding there was more than a 1/8000 chance of finding a Shiny Pokemon. I cried two years later when I finally discovered what it meant.

4191851
Still not dumber than being so crazy hyped during my first Pokemonday (or my second? I only went to two and during one I won an awesome Riolu-toy), that I traded my Dialga...
FOR.
A.
SPEAROW!!! At least it was on the same level

4191868
Well, I mean, Spearow is...

...Well, it has a great...

...It looks, uh...

...The colors are... well...

...

...yeah, you got robbed.

I'm going to piss off a lot of people by saying this, Pokémon red and blue was the worst main series game. Yes it brought the series where it is today and I respect it a lot for that but it was glitchy as hell and contrary to popular believe had some of the laziest designs. At the time all of the designs was basic and that can be good like Charizard, Mew,and Pikachu for example but others like Muk, Dugtrio, Geodude, Seel, and Magneton was the definition of running out of ideas.

Pokemon has got better over the years and if you don't think so you where are never a fan of Pokémon to begin with.

4191877
Good thing you won't piss off anyone on my blogs, because quite frankly I have the exact same thoughts. Well, except for the Magneton part because it actually is a good Pokemon. And please don't say GameFreak is running out of ideas, no matter what game you're actually talking about. Just saying... :twilightsheepish:

4191914 Glad you agree.
I like Magneton too but it's just 3 Magnemite glued together, good Pokemon but not the most creative of designs.

4191851 Lucky you found at least found a shiny. I never found one until... hmm... Furfrou two years ago? I never had the patience to hunt for shinies like some people do.

4191928
I later found two shiny Luvdisc on my most recent playthrough of X within the same hour. :ajsmug:

Nah my dude. This little bitch made my day.:rainbowlaugh: However, I would like to offer a couple of corrections.

Hoho

First off its Ho-oh little bitch:flutterrage:(not Kamek)
Second, Pokegear is exclusive to Johto, which sucks.
Never played much of Diamond and Pearl myself, but it did introduce my all time favorite eeveeloution in the form of Glaceon, so no complaints.

4191933 Yeah, but anyone can get that lucky in chain fishing in X/Y. I got my Furfrou without a charm just by walking down the route.

And yes, I do change it's form. I prefer Top Hat

http://orig00.deviantart.net/b895/f/2014/019/2/a/new_furfrou_caballero_shiny_by_fernando0314-d72v2if.png

4192002
Who said I was chain fishing? :raritywink: I got those shinies before I even stepped into the second gym.

4191936
Hence why I made the Santa Bird joke.

4192009 Well, Luvdisc could imply you were fishing, as it's only obtainable with the fishing rod from the Aquarium. You even have access to Suction Cups with Inkay :raritywink:

...I've been playing X recently.

4192017
I was at my cottage a few weeks ago when I bought X again and played through it. I had no internet access, so I didn't know what the old rod would bring me when I fished around. Seeing Luvdisc, I decided to fish around a bit and see I could snatch a few Heart Scales. Lo and behold, two shinies appeared before me.

Also, Inkay kinda sucks, so I never caught it. :twilightsheepish:

4192011 Which I found funny. But only fellow Pokénerds are allowed to rip on my games.:scootangel:

4192034 Inkay's very... situational imo. Not going to go on about strategies, but he could be worse I suppose.

4191840
An anime called Rosario Vampire. It has a few interesting characters, but it sadly relied more on fanservice then actual plot or character progression (even though there was some.) Back when I was 15, I loved it, mostly because, well, I was 15 and something like that was just fun to watch on a rainy day. My thoughts since are, it's a case of great idea, great characters, good source material (manga.) But meh anime adaptation. But honestly, Mizore (the Yuki-onna) is probably my second favorite character in the show.

And as for the second, thanks man, it's great to be back posting here.

4191877
4191914
Grrghehduebbs! How dreeee u! Pokimon Rid in Blu r da best Pkiemon games evar! Gen wun is best! All new porkimon sukkkkkk!!!! How dare u! U 2 have destrued mi chuldhooddd you meanie mien maet people!!!!!!

4193278
And you were 15, so one of the main selling points was BOOBS! :rainbowkiss:

Sounds like my kind of anime, quite frankly. Interesting characters, fanservice... and that's all you need to make me interested. Also, BACK when you were 15? Dude, you might be way older than I am! :rainbowlaugh:

4193282
Well, god bless him; he tried.

4193523
Well it was more the general idea of a harem story, (this was my first exposure to the genre, second anime I ever watched.) See, I had no friends at the time, I'd just moved sooo, yeah any anime that had groups of friends/romances was a good way to calm down from social stress. But yes, i do suppose that played a part in it.:rainbowkiss::rainbowlaugh:

I should note when I say interesting, I mean quirky. But it was a fun watch for me back then, even if it wasn't the most well written of shows. But yeah, it was fun and in the end, that's really all I want sometimes. And (REDACTED) on my end.:rainbowkiss:

4193524
I actually thought about putting a satire tag, just in case, knowing there actually are people who write like that online.:rainbowlaugh:

4193549
I can't tell you my own age due to personal reasons, but just know I'm around your age.

I've been in a similar situation like yours: just moved, had no friends. But video games were my calling, and because of it I have a grand total of... one real-life friend! But it all evens out because I have you guys, and I love talking with you guys about the strangest of shit.

4193563
I figured as much, and thank you for reminding me to redact my age!:rainbowkiss:

And ywah, moving is always a pain. It was a mix of anime and games like Persona and Assassins Creed that got me through it though. Heck, just recently I moved again, and playing Hatsune Miku has been a really relaxing experience through it all. But yeah, it's always a blast posting on these blogs!

Thanks for tearing that apart. I loved Diamond and Pearl a lot. I will say though, I will forever have one unforgivable moment with Platinum. And that's when this one kid trades me a haunter holding an everstone...I will never forgive you asshat...

4201541
That chick is one total bitch. :flutterrage:
Though, if you have a friend handy or simply another DS with Pearl or whatever, you could get that Gengar and be happy at last.

4201563

I know :twilightangry2:

I felt like the creators of platinum did that to build us up just to break us down.

Or in my case. A copy of Diamond and Pearl along with a DS lite that was long lost but rediscovered behind several books on a shelf and a new replacement DS lite acquired as a birthday gift.
