Suicide Squad: Review. · 2:17pm Aug 9th, 2016

What's this? A modern DC comics movie that's actually...FUN? Surprisingly, yes. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Lets start from the top.

After Superman's death in the previous film, Batman v Superman, the governments of the world start to become uneasy. Metahuman activity is slowly raising and their best hope to deal with it, Superman himself, is dead. Intelligence operative Amanda Waller had a back up plan. Build a special forces team out of the most dangerous criminals, killers, and sociopaths she can find and throw them at threats to the world...No way that could go wrong.

Of course, something does go wrong, and its up to Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Killer Crock, Captain Boomerang, and El Diablo to save the world, whether they want to or not. Waller implants them with nano bombs, threatening to blow off their heads if they don't work for her and sends them off to stop the end of the world. No worries, I mean, they're just bad guys, right?

This movie was a lot of fun. Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn pretty much steal the show. Smith falls back into his classic smartass comedy (though more mature and subdued), while bringing a great level of humanity to the assassin and Robbie brings the Joker's crazy girlfriend to life perfectly in the character's live action debut. The jokes will make you giggle, the action is fun, and there are even a few spots where you might tear up a little. Sadly though, no movie is without issues, and this one has a few.

The movie suffers from poor pacing in a few spots. The 'villain' of the movie is predictable and some of the characters come off as dumb for not seeing it coming, characters that were really smart earlier in the film. Pretty much the whole conflict of the film is caused by Waller herself, even though she should have seen it coming.

And now, the biggest failing of the movie, The Joker. When most think of the Joker now, they think of Heath Ledger's chilling 'Scars' monologue or Mark Hamill's startling laugh from the animated series. Sadly, Jared Leto brings none of that to this movie. At the beginning it shows promise, making The Joker very creepy and unnerving, but the quickly falls away as we see him more. The tattoos on his face and body, the silver grill in his teeth, I'm not sure he even killed anyone in this movie. He comes off less like the Clown Prince of crime and more like one of those street thugs from Batman Beyond, the ones that dressed as clowns called themselves Jokers.

Fans of Harley Quinn and the Joker will be further disappointed by the relationship the two have in this movie. Namely, that they one at all. Yes, Harley loves "Mista J", but Joker actually returns those affections in the movie, making him some what relatiable and, dare I say, human. For those wondering why that's a problem, let me ask you this. Show he be? The Joker, the character that shot and paralyzed Batgirl, beat a child with a crowbar and then killed him with explosion, kidnapped Commissioner Gordon so he could slowly drive him insane to piss off Batman, the character that did all of this and more, considered one of the greatest villains of all time. This guy should be made likable? Really?

All in all, this is fun movie. It has some problems but is a good sit through. If you're a DC fan or if you just want to kill 2 hours with something that'll put a smile on your face, give this movie a look. That's all for now. See you next time.
