Stranger than Fan Fiction review · 8:11am Jul 31st, 2016
Hello there. It's been about 7 weeks since I wrote my review about a new episode and I'm glad it wasn't longer. That's right, we have officially gotten through the hiatus. What an episode to come back to. This is another great episode featuring everyponies favorite adventurer and treasure seeker, Daring Do. We first experienced Daring Do back in season 2 with "read it and weep" which explored Rainbow's reluctance to acknowledge the wonderful pleasure of reading. In that she was simply a plot device to show Rainbow that you can be athletic and still enjoy something as "eggheaded" as reading. Probably the biggest surprise for the characters was when, in season 4, they learned that the author of the Daring Do books actually WAS Daring Do. That was another wonderful episode that dealt with something I feel every fan of anything would experience: actually meeting their hero or someone they admire and not being able to recognize their own self worth since they placed their hero on such a high pedestal. And how does this third episode in the Daring Do arc compare? My thoughts below.
This was an incredibly fun episode. It was interesting to look at how other ponies spend their lives and how removed the actions of the mane six actually are from the day to day lives of the rest of Equestria, even though they've saved the world at least half a dozen times. The fact that no one recognizes Rainbow at the convention shows just how much they work in the shadows. I also enjoyed the character Quibble who acts like a large portion of many fanbases, mainly with his refusal to acknowledge anything of Daring Do after the first trilogy. I know of several people who refuse to acknowledge a movie from a franchise simply because they didn't like it. If you don't like something about your favorite movie franchise, TV series, or book series or any combination there of, then that's fine but don't lessen the creator's integrity or other fans enjoyment with it by saying that you don't recognize it as being part of that series. If you don't like some aspect of it, then you should explain why you don't like it but don't resort to insulting other fans when they say they enjoy it.
That brings me to the overall message of the episode: Some people will enjoy different things about the same stories than you, that doesn't make you wrong and them right or you right and them wrong, it simply means just that different people enjoy different things about the same stories. One last note about something I found enjoyable about the episode. Over the end credits, there is no music only dialogue as Quibble Pants talks about his own personal head canon universe and how much their adventure has inspired him. This was a hilarious little nod to all the stories that pop up on this and other sites, moments after an episode airs and shows just how in tune the creators of the show are with the fans. That's about all for Stranger than Fan Fiction. Next week, hold onto your apples.
