Pre-Equestrian Era. (A Middle Ages headcanon history) EXTRA: Cornic, the Ancient Unicorn Tongue · 3:28am May 30th, 2016
Cornic is the ancient language of the Unicorns dating back to before the Rising Middle Ages, it's name derived from it's own word for 'Horn' (specifically that of a Unicorn) which is 'Corne'. The word Unicorn itself being derived from Cornic for 'One Horn' (Unicorne). The modern language of Equestrian originates from a medieval auxiliary language developed during the Rising Middle Ages, then known as 'Equestie' (Eques-ti-eh) or 'Pony Tongue/Language'. Equestie was developed from Cornic as well as the languages of Lingua Caelum (Pegasus language), Daleic (Common Earth pony language of the Kingdom of the Golden Field), and potentially other languages of the era as well. It is said that the language was structured to allow for rhyme within speaking, evident with the number of rhyming words.
The following is some limited information gathered about the Language of Cornic, devised from studies on literary finds from the early centuries of the Rising Middle Ages as well as finds from later periods showing a scholarly interest in the language persisting even after Equestie became a primary language in Unicorn kingdoms such as Unihorn and Neingland.
