Smaug the Golden

All is not lost; the unconquerable will, and study of revenge, immortal hate, and the courage never to submit or yield: and what else is not to be overcome?

Of Jet Lag, Movies I should have seen years ago, and probably some story stuff · 11:21pm May 11th, 2016

Whelp. I just got off the plane from Seattle to China. And then slept for twelve hours, which is significantly more than I usually get. Anyway, because it's really hard to focus on the Gathering Storm when a) you can't turn on your kindle light for fear of waking people, and b) the plane was rocking so hard I spent about an hour and a half trying to eat fried rice, I ended up watching some movies I should have seen earlier. And I wrote a bunch. There was that too.

Accurate Movie Assessments by Smaug the Golden
Pocahontas: Robots and Dinosaurs edition
Controversy, directed by Zack Snyder.

Spoilers, thoughts and stuff other than snarky movie names below.

I actually liked both of them, but they had their faults. Avatar was enjoyable to look at, and had some fun worldbuilding, but there's a very real reason I call it Pocahontas with robots and dinosaurs. Plot was really, really bad. Figured out who was going to die, who was going to live, villains, heroes, etc. about ten minutes in. Took me five seconds to figure out who the villains were. But like I said, it was really enjoyable worldbuilding along with some pretty scenery, so I'm willing to give it that. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not, at least not unless it's showing on an airplane or in a doctor's office (which it probably will be, all things considered).

Mane of Steel was a fun romp. The action was some of the best shot I've seen in a while. It was clear, concise, and really, really fun. It did a fantastic job of conveying the sheer power of the individuals fighting. I enjoyed the performance of pretty much every actor in it, especially for Zod and his lieutenants, even if they were over the top at times. But the backstory alternating between present and past was clunky and took me out of it, simply because I had trouble figuring out when the scenes that came after were taking place. Not going to step within a thousand feet of the neck breaking or anything like that, but I will say that, overall, I felt that the movie was enjoyable at times, cringey at others.

Now, onto some other things. Like I said, I'm in China currently. Which means that I'm suffering serious jet lag. Which means that, in turn, there are these giant stretches where I'm writing at four in the morning, cause I can't move for fear of waking anyone up. So I'm probably going to write a lot. Will anything come out of it? Not bloody clue, but I hope to get my current project (which is the result of splitting Aileron into two separate ones) into a decent state by the time I get back. Also, I feel incredibly tall here. I'm going to feel short when I got back to the states. :pinkiesad2:

Now, for story related stuff. Like I said a bit earlier, I've got a large project on my hands. Aileron, which I've made plenty of posts about, was going through editing recently when I realized that a large portion of it wouldn't work. After spending a lot of time stewing over that fact, I split it into two separate stories, both of which I hope worker better as their own separate stories. The former (or the one I put as higher priority), is now an odyssey-esque adventure. The latter is much of what Aileron was in the first place: treasure hunt, pirates, etc.

Anyway, that's all I've got for today. Thanks for reading.
