No Second Prances review · 12:31am May 6th, 2016
Another episode another review. Sorry it took so long to do this but since the episode I have been spending my time studying for tests and writing papers. With this episode we see a return to the moral of the premier in Starlight's first central episode. When I learned that Starlight would have to make the first friend since Sunburst and I thought it was really great to see that the writers were able to work such an entertaining character like Trixie into the story. My thoughts to spoiler aspects of the show below:
We haven't seen Trixie since season 3 (not counting the EQG movies) so it was nice of her to be back. I thought the moral was really great, that you should judge people based only on what you know about them and not what you haven't witnessed first hand. Another moral was not to let others influence your opinion's of people based on what they heard or know about them. In short, to always give people the benefit of the doubt even when past experiance would seem to dictate otherwise.
I think Starlight was the best character to show this since she is having to live with the things she did during the last season and doesn't want anypony to judge her based on those actions. This is a similar plot point that comes up in Rainbow Rocks. Sunset wants to befriend the Dazzlings before they hear about what she did in the first movie, unfortunately sunset doesn't plan on them being evil crazy seahorses from Equestria but the motive remains the same. I did like the fact that in Trixie and Starlight they each find a kindred spirit who has been ostracized and still is willing to make amends.
My only real issue with this episode was Twilight. It seems she had forgotten the message she learned in the premier and is still trying to control Starlight's friendship lessons as if she was doing an experiment. At least at the end she tells Starlight that the best way a teacher can teach is by letting the student make their own decisions but still be there to offer guidance, similar to Twilight's and Celestia's relationship in the first three seasons. Hopefully the writers will be able to continue exploring the parallels between these two student teacher relationships without relying on this one single plot point. That's all I've got to say about No Second Prances, next time this blog is going to get about 20% cooler.
